XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Honda PRELUDE BA4/5/7 1987-1991

The third-generation Prelude was a road car with a rally-friendly secret: a low bonnet, double-wishbones at all four corners, and a wheelbase short enough to rotate on the throttle when the surface lets go. The BA4/5/7 platform has always responded well to stiffer, longer-travel damping, and on loose surfaces that double-wishbone geometry is exactly what makes the chassis worth building in 2026.

XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover is the spec for owners taking an HN44 Prelude onto gravel stages or rallycross – long-stroke, inverted-tube dampers built around spring rates validated by working rally teams, not adapted from a tarmac kit.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1991 Honda Prelude

Drop these in and the Prelude stops crashing through compressions and starts working with the surface. The long stroke lets the chassis settle into a stage corner instead of skipping across the top, so the front wishbones can actually load up and bite. Sandstone, snow, silt – the inverted tube design keeps the damper body protected and the shaft working in clean oil, which on a loose surface is the difference between consistent damping at stage-six and a car that’s gone off the boil before lunch. You also get the ride height and corner-balance range to set the car up properly for whatever surface the event throws at you, rather than running a road compromise on the day.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

This is XYZ Racing’s dedicated rally and rallycross damper, and the construction reflects that. The inverted-tube layout puts the larger-diameter body up top and the shaft into the lower mount, which keeps stone-strike damage off the seal and improves the unsprung-to-sprung mass balance – important when the surface itself is doing half the damping work. Stroke length is deliberately long to handle aggressive high-speed bouncy road and absorb the G-loads the chassis sees mid-corner on gravel, where grip arrives in pulses rather than as a steady state. Spring rates are not theoretical – XYZ states every rate in the range is tested by their rally racing team, so you’re starting from a known baseline rather than guessing a road-derived rate onto a loose surface. The result is a damper engineered specifically around the chaos of a rally stage rather than scaled down from a circuit kit.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit
