XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Honda PRELUDE BA4/5/7 1987-1991

The third-generation Prelude was Honda’s first proper attempt at a grown-up sports coupe, and the BA4/5/7 chassis has aged into something specific: a low-cowl, pop-up-headlight platform with double wishbones at all four corners and, on later cars, four-wheel steering. That wishbone geometry rewards a coilover that can actually use the camber curve – which is exactly the brief the XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover answers for the 1987-1991 Prelude.

This is the kit for owners running the BA chassis on weekend track days but still driving it to the circuit. The Top Sport’s spring and damper calibration is set roughly 30-50% firmer than the equivalent street tune, with spring rates stepped up by around 2 kg/mm, so the car sits flatter through Druids or Paddock without beating you up on the A40 home.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1991 Honda Prelude

A second-gen B20A or B21A Prelude on tired OEM struts noses under braking and rolls more than the wishbone geometry was ever designed to tolerate. Swap in the Top Sport and the front end stays composed under threshold braking, so the nose actually points where the wheel asks rather than washing wide. Body roll drops, weight transfer happens faster, and the rear axle – including the 4WS rear on Si trims – starts to feel deliberate again. Ride height is fully adjustable so you can drop the BA to a stance that suits the pop-up nose without bottoming the dampers, and the firmer rates restore the front-axle bite the wishbones can deliver when you stop overworking the bushings.

About the Top Sport coilover

The Top Sport sits in XYZ Racing’s lineup as the track-day-and-street setup, taking calibration directly from their Top Sport race programme. Damping is stiffened roughly 30-50% over street settings, paired with spring rates around 2 kg/mm higher, which is enough to soak up rough British B-road surfaces and circuit kerbs without unloading the contact patch. The intention is impact absorption over genuine bumps while suppressing the shock travel that costs you traction mid-corner. Construction is built around adjustable ride height and damping, with the calibration biased toward stability under aggressive driving – turn-in, mid-corner load, and traction out of slow corners. It is engineered for track day use and harder road driving, not for stripped-out time-attack work, which keeps it usable as a daily setup.

Fitment for the Honda Prelude (1987-1991)

This kit is calibrated for the third-generation Prelude chassis code HN44, covering the BA4, BA5 and BA7 model years from 1987 through to 1991. Front and rear units are matched to the double-wishbone geometry of the BA platform.
