XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Honda CIVIC EP2/EP3 2001-2005

The EP3 Civic Type R was already a front-driven scalpel on tarmac, but point one at a gravel stage and the standard chassis runs out of stroke long before the K20 runs out of revs. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover for the 2001-2005 Civic EP2/EP3 is the answer to that specific problem – an inverted-tube damper with stroke length and spring travel sized for sandstone, snow and silt rather than smooth British B-roads.

This is not a fast-road kit pressed into rally service. It is a dedicated gravel-stage damper for the HN20 chassis, with spring rates signed off by an actual rally team rather than guessed at from a desk.

What this coilover does for your 2001-2005 Honda Civic EP2/EP3

On a loose surface the EP3’s short-travel front strut and torsion-beam rear simply cannot keep the contact patch loaded over compressions, kerbs and ruts. The Gravel Rally’s long stroke gives the wheels somewhere to go when the surface drops away, so the inside-front stays planted under power out of a hairpin and the rear stops skipping sideways over washboard. The inverted-tube layout puts the larger, stiffer body at the top of the strut, which resists bending loads when the car lands heavy after a yump or takes a kerb at full chat. The long springs hold rate through full droop, so the car doesn’t go light and unpredictable as the suspension extends over a crest. For an EP3 used in stage rally or rallycross, the practical result is a chassis you can lean on at speed instead of one you spend the stage nursing.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing designed this damper specifically for rally and rallycross, which it identifies as the most aggressive racing surface category any shock absorber has to deal with. The construction is an inverted-tube monotube – the format used because gravel work loads the strut in bending as well as compression, and a conventional damper body deflects under those loads. Stroke length is deliberately long, paired with longer-than-standard springs, so the suspension can absorb large single-hit inputs from rocks, ruts and landings while still controlling the high-frequency vibration that comes off a fast gravel surface. Spring rates across the range have been validated by XYZ Racing’s own rally teams in competition, not signed off from bench data. The brief was simple: handle the high G-forces of hard cornering on a loose surface, survive repeat heavy compressions, and keep working when the road is sand one stage and snow the next.

Fitment for the Honda CIVIC EP2/EP3 (2001-2005)

This kit is built for the HN20 chassis Civic – the EP2 hatch and the EP3 Type R – across the 2001-2005 production run. It is a direct replacement for the factory front strut and rear shock arrangement.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
