XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Honda CIVIC EP2/EP3 2001-2005

The EP3 Civic Type R arrived from Swindon already half-prepped for competition – 197bhp K20A2, a 6-speed close-ratio box, and a kerb weight that flatters every spring rate you throw at it. What it lacks, on a closed-road tarmac stage, is the compression travel and rebound control to put that K-series power down over crested junctions and broken village surfaces. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover is built for that exact job: keeping an EP2 or EP3 hooked up when the road stops being smooth.

This is not a circuit kit asked to moonlight on rough surfaces. The damper is valved specifically for sealed-stage rally use – softer initial compression to swallow mid-corner crests and patched tarmac, then progressive control that stops the front strut tower from bottoming when the nose drops into a compression.

What this coilover does for your 2001-2005 Honda Civic EP2/EP3

On the EP3 chassis in particular, the factory front strut is the weak link the moment surfaces get aggressive – the car skips, the inside-front goes light, and the LSD-less Type R starts spinning away apex exit drive. The Tarmac Rally damping profile is engineered to absorb that jolt rather than transmit it, keeping tyre contact patch loaded through compressions where a stiffer track coilover would unload and skate.

You feel it as composure: the front end stops pattering over surface joins, the rear stays planted under trail-braking into tight third-gear corners, and bigger hits no longer translate into a steering wheel jolt that costs you a quarter-second of commitment. For the EP2 1.6 VTi variant, the same valving turns a chassis that was always sweet on smooth B-roads into something genuinely fast across surfaces a standard car would refuse.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally damper is the product of XYZ Racing’s own tarmac stage programme, and the valving reflects that pedigree rather than a generic "rally" badge slapped on a track unit. Construction is built to take repeat big hits without fade, with shock absorption tuned to suppress body movement when the car lands from a crested jump or hammers across a patched section of stage. The brief is specific: absorb the jolt when crossing a big bump, suppress shock body movement, and increase tyre traction through the compression that follows.

The result is a coilover that lets the EP3 use its long-travel suspension geometry the way the chassis was designed to, rather than fighting against locked-up dampers that bind on the second hit. Every setting carries over from XYZ’s Tarmac Rally racing experience – this is competition data, not a fast-road kit rebranded.

Fitment for the Honda CIVIC EP2/EP3 (2001-2005)

Direct-fit for the EP2 and EP3 chassis codes, covering the 2001-2005 production run – both the 1.6 VTi (EP2) and the 197bhp K20A2 Type R (EP3). Chassis code HN20 in the XYZ catalogue. Front MacPherson strut and rear double-wishbone configuration matched to factory mounting points.
