XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Ford PROBE 1993-1997

The Ford Probe is a strange thing to be prepping for a gravel stage in 2026 – a front-drive Mazda-platform coupe with a long bonnet, an MX-6 floorpan, and a fanbase that mostly wants it lowered on tarmac. But the people running them in regional stage rallies and rallycross events know the chassis has more in it than the period road-test press credited, provided the dampers can survive being repeatedly launched off compression. That is the entire brief here.

The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover for the 1993-1997 Probe is built for one job: keeping a 90s Japanese-platform coupe planted on broken surfaces – sandstone, snow, silt – without the damper folding under sustained high-G abuse. Long stroke, long spring, inverted-tube body. It is not a road kit and it is not pretending to be.

What this coilover does for your 1993-1997 Ford Probe

On gravel, the difference between finishing a stage and parking it on a ditch line is whether the damper can absorb a metre-long compression hit and still control the next one half a second later. The inverted-tube construction puts the larger-diameter body at the bottom of the strut, which raises the rigidity of the mounting point and protects the shaft from side-loading every time the front axle clatters into a rut. You get a Probe that tracks straighter through corrugations, lands cleaner off crests, and stops chewing through bumpstops on the first stage of a wet day.

The long-stroke geometry matters more than spring rate on a car this size. It lets the suspension stay in its working range instead of topping out over yumps and bottoming on landings – which is where front-drive cars usually lose drive traction and snap into understeer on exit.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed this damper specifically for rally and rallycross – events where the road surface is the most aggressive variable in the car. The construction is an inverted monotube design chosen to handle the worst of what gravel stages produce: sandstone, packed snow, silt, and the kind of sustained high-frequency impacts that flatten conventional twin-tube valving in a single event. Spring lengths are extended to give the chassis room to absorb hits from high-speed bouncy sections and to bear the G-force loading that builds up through long, committed corner entries.

Every spring rate offered in this range has been tested by working rally teams in competition – not bench-set and shipped. That feedback loop is what separates a real gravel coilover from a lowered fast-road kit with stiffer springs. The whole product is built around the assumption that the car will be abused on purpose.

Fitment for the Ford PROBE (1993-1997)

This kit is matched to the second-generation Ford Probe on the FO17 chassis code, covering the 1993 through 1997 model years. The fitment is the Mazda-MX-6-platform Probe with the front MacPherson layout – confirm your year and chassis before configuring spring rates.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
