XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Ford PROBE 1993-1997

The second-generation Ford Probe was always an odd one out – a front-drive Mazda MX-6 cousin sold as Ford’s late-80s sports coupe replacement, with a chassis that flatters smooth surfaces but punishes anything broken. On a sealed UK stage, with kerbs, patched tarmac and the odd standing puddle, the standard Probe damping runs out of travel and the nose loads up long before the front tyres are done talking. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover is built for exactly that compromise: the surface looks smooth from the road book, but the car still has to survive whatever the resurfacing crew left behind.

This is the hardcore sealed-stage spec, not a fast-road kit pretending to be one. The Probe’s long bonnet and front-heavy KL-DE V6 layout (or the 2.0 four in earlier cars) means weight transfer onto the outside front is the limiting factor, and the Tarmac Rally damper is tuned to keep that corner planted through compressions instead of skipping over them.

What this coilover does for your 1993-1997 Ford Probe

The headline gain is bump absorption without losing platform control – the two things that usually trade against each other on a stiff rally setup. Over a mid-corner ridge or a broken kerb apex, the damping soaks the hit and returns the tyre to the road instead of letting the chassis hop and wash wide. On the Probe, where the front end is doing most of the work, that translates directly into more confidence to commit on turn-in and earlier throttle on the way out. Body roll is contained but not eliminated, which matters on a sealed stage where you still need the chassis to take a set. Ride height is adjustable so you can dial out the Probe’s slightly nose-up factory rake and recover some front-end bite.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally damper is engineered specifically to absorb the impact of uneven pavement – the broken edges, mid-corner ruts and resurfacing seams that define a real UK sealed stage. It suppresses body shock through big bumps and works to keep the tyre loaded against the surface so traction holds where a less specialised damper would skip. The settings carry over directly from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally competition programme rather than being adapted from a fast-road platform, which is why the damping curve favours composure over outright stiffness. Spring and damper rates are matched to the use case, and vehicle stability through repeated impacts is the design priority. The result is a coilover that lets the driver feel what the front axle is doing rather than fighting the chassis for it.
