XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E39 M5 1998-2003

The E39 M5 is the heaviest M-car of its era and the S62 sits a long way forward of the front axle line – any serious track setup has to fight that weight bias before it can do anything clever. The Racing Spec coilover for the 1998-2003 5 Series E39 M5 is the kit XYZ Racing builds when the standard M-Technic damping has been left behind and the car is being run in anger on circuit or in time attack.

This is the top of the XYZ ladder for the E39 chassis – settings derived from WTCC participation, not lifted from a generic catalogue. It is aimed at owners who already know the car wants more rebound control to settle that long nose under trail-braking, and more compression resistance to stop the rear squatting on power out of a slow corner.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2003 Bmw 5 Series E39 M5

The E39 M5 carries roughly 1,795kg of saloon body with a 4.9-litre V8 hanging over the front axle, and on standard dampers it tells you about every kilo when you load the front into a quick direction change. The Racing Spec kit pulls the chassis down on the wheel, takes the slow body movement out, and gives you a front end that actually responds to steering input on turn-in rather than rolling onto its outside front and washing wide. Rear traction out of slow corners climbs visibly – the back axle stops levering itself out of its travel under hard throttle, which matters when the S62 is putting 400PS through an open rear on a damp Cadwell apex. Brake stability through the heavy stops at the end of a long straight goes up another notch, because the platform isn’t pitching forward and unloading the rear. Body control through fast sweeping corners – Druids, Paddock Hill, Coppice – is where you really feel the rebound work, holding the outside-front planted instead of letting the car float across a kerb mid-corner.

About the Racing Spec coilover

Racing Spec is XYZ Racing’s track-only specification, developed directly through participation in WTCC events rather than through dyno-rig theory. The settings are race-derived rather than fast-road compromised, which puts it a clear tier above the company’s circuit-and-road products. Construction is built for repeat-session abuse – the kind of duty cycle where dampers see heat-soak across a full open-pitlane day and still need to feel the same on the last lap as the first. For cars running aggressive upgrades – cage, sticky rubber, more power, A-Class-level preparation – XYZ Racing will custom-build the shock absorber to suit the specific car, circuit, and tyre choice if you supply the build sheet. That is genuinely unusual at this price tier – most off-the-shelf race kits leave you to find someone with a damper dyno to revalve them later. With the Racing Spec, the revalve happens before the box leaves Taiwan.

Fitment for the Bmw 5 Series E39 (1998-2003)

This kit is specified for the E39 M5 chassis as built between 1998 and 2003 – the S62-engined V8 saloon, not the lesser six-cylinder E39 variants. Fitment is for the M5-specific front strut and rear damper geometry, which differs from the standard 5 Series.
