XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Toyota TERCEL 1995-2002

The fifth-generation Tercel is a featherweight – a sub-tonne front-driver on a simple strut layout that was never meant for anything rougher than a supermarket car park. On a loose gravel stage that low mass becomes the asset, and the XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is the part that turns a humble TO55 shell into something that can attack a sandy, rutted special stage. These are long-travel dampers built for the surfaces a road car would shy away from.

Where this kit earns its name is in the stroke. Gravel punishes a damper with constant high-frequency hits and big single compressions over crests and ruts, and the Gravel Rally coilover is engineered around exactly that – long spring, long travel, and the soak to keep the Tercel’s contact patches loaded when the surface is anything but flat.

What this coilover does for your 1995-2002 Toyota Tercel

The first thing you feel in the Tercel after fitting is composure over broken ground. The long-stroke design keeps the suspension working when a standard strut would have run out of travel and started skipping, so the front tyres stay planted through ruts and washboard. The inverted-tube construction adds the stiffness to carry the lateral loads a gravel corner throws at a light front-driver without the damper flexing or fading mid-stage. Spring rates are set for loose-surface compliance rather than tarmac stiffness, which keeps the rear of the Tercel willing to rotate on a lifted throttle – the trait that makes a lightweight FWD car genuinely quick on gravel. The car soaks up the hits instead of being deflected by them.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally coilover is XYZ Racing’s dedicated loose-surface damper, developed for rallycross and gravel-stage rallying where the road conditions are the most punishing in motorsport. It uses an inverted-tube design chosen specifically to cope with the variety a stage throws up – sandstone, snow and silt each load a damper differently, and the inverted layout gives the strength and consistency to handle all three. The long stroke and long spring are the heart of the package: they let the suspension absorb sustained chassis vibration, attack high-speed bouncy sections without bottoming, and carry the extreme cornering G-force that comes with turning a car in at speed on a low-grip surface. The spring rates are not theoretical – XYZ Racing’s own rally team validated every setting in competition. It is a coilover built around the realities of a stage rather than a spec sheet.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
