XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Toyota CALDINA 4WD 1996-2002

The Caldina 4WD’s rally-bred running gear was never really built for tarmac manners – this GT-Four-derived estate came from the factory as a homologation special, and on loose surfaces its all-wheel-drive platform wants dampers that can absorb repeated hard hits without losing composure. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover is built specifically for that brief: sandstone, snow, silt, and everything a gravel stage throws at a chassis at speed.

For anyone campaigning a Caldina 4WD in rallycross or stage rally, the standard damper stroke simply runs out of travel too early. This kit swaps in a long-stroke, long-spring design that keeps the wheel in contact with the ground through the compressions and crests that define gravel driving, rather than topping or bottoming out mid-stage.

What this coilover does for your 1996-2002 Toyota CALDINA 4WD

Rally Cross and gravel-stage conditions are the most aggressive a damper will ever see, and the Caldina 4WD’s independent-feeling but all-wheel-drive-loaded suspension needs a shock absorber that treats that as the baseline, not the exception. The inverted tube construction on this coilover is there to keep seal and rod life intact when the car is being pounded by ruts and compressions lap after stage, not just for a single hot lap. Extended stroke length means the chassis can move through its full range without the abrupt end-of-travel harshness that causes a loose-surface car to skip sideways under compression. The longer spring works with that extended stroke to absorb chassis vibration transmitted up from the axle, which matters on a 4WD platform where all four corners are loading and unloading through a turn rather than just the driven wheels. Set correctly, the result is a Caldina that keeps its tyres tracking the terrain instead of skating over the top of it, which is what actually turns into stage time.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing designed this line specifically for Rally Racing and Rally Cross use, working from the position that gravel-stage road conditions are the most aggressive test any damper faces in competition. The inverted tube layout is built to cope with a range of loose-surface conditions – sandstone, snow, and silt each load a damper differently, and the inverted design is aimed at handling that variability rather than being tuned for one surface type. Stroke length and spring length are both extended over a standard road-going coilover, giving the damper room to absorb chassis vibration and to soak up hard, high-speed impacts from broken and bouncy stage surfaces without transmitting that shock straight into the chassis. That extra travel also has to cope with the extreme cornering loads a 4WD rally car generates, where lateral G-force stacks on top of vertical compression through a turn. XYZ Racing states that spring rate settings on this line were tested by its own Rally Racing team, so the rates supplied aren’t a generic road-spec carryover – they’re set against the same kind of loads a Caldina 4WD sees on an actual stage.

Fitment for the Toyota CALDINA (1996-2002)

This kit is built for the Toyota Caldina 4WD, chassis code TO09, covering the 1996 to 2002 model years. It’s specified for the 4WD drivetrain variant of the Caldina rather than the front-wheel-drive versions sold across the same generation, so confirm your car is the 4WD model before ordering.

Fitted correctly, this is a damper built around what a Caldina 4WD actually faces on a stage rather than a road-tuned kit pressed into rally service – configure yours below to match your car and event.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
