XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Hyundai TUCSON 2004-2009

The first-generation Hyundai Tucson (JM chassis) was never built with stage timing in mind – it was built as a soft, tall family crossover with a body that rolls, a nose that dives, and dampers that give up the moment the surface stops being smooth. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover takes that compromised platform and rebuilds it around a single job: holding the front tyres planted on broken sealed-stage tarmac without unsettling the chassis.

For a 2004-2009 Tucson being prepped for tarmac rally use – or for an owner who simply wants the JM to stop wallowing on a B-road – this is the spec sheet that matters. Ride height, spring rate, and damping are all set from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally programme rather than carried over from a road kit.

What this coilover does for your 2004-2009 Hyundai Tucson

Drop the JM Tucson onto these and the first thing you feel is the body stop pitching. The Tucson’s tall ride height and soft factory springs are the reason it understeers off-throttle and squats under power; the Tarmac Rally setup pulls the centre of gravity down and gives the front axle a damper that actually controls the wheel rather than chasing it. Mid-corner bumps that used to deflect the nose now get absorbed and the steering stays where you put it.

Under hard braking the front no longer dives onto its bump stops, which means more of the pad’s bite reaches the tyre instead of being eaten by suspension travel. Across patched, ridged, and crowned tarmac – the stuff that defines a UK closed-road stage – the chassis settles between hits instead of bouncing through them, so traction returns immediately on corner exit rather than two car-lengths later.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally is XYZ Racing’s sealed-stage rally damper, built specifically to swallow the kind of sharp, repeated impacts that broken tarmac throws at a moving car. Where a road or circuit coilover prioritises a flat platform on smooth surfaces, this one is valved to absorb the jolt of a deep transverse ridge or a poorly patched join without transmitting it through the chassis as a deflection.

The damping settings, ride height window, and spring choice all carry across from XYZ Racing’s competition tarmac rally programme – this is not a road kit relabelled, it is the same engineering philosophy applied to the Tucson’s strut geometry. Compression is tuned to take the shock out of the body so the contact patch can recover quickly; rebound is set to keep the tyre loaded through the next disturbance rather than topping out between hits. The net result is a damper that increases mechanical grip on surfaces where a softer setup would skip and a stiffer one would deflect.

This kit is built for the first-generation Hyundai Tucson, chassis HY24, across the 2004 to 2009 production span. Fitment covers the JM platform Tucson in its UK and European market specification for that year range.
