XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Hyundai TIBURON 1996-2001

The first-generation Tiburon (RD chassis) was Hyundai’s mid-90s coupe with MacPherson struts up front and a fully independent multi-link rear – light, front-driven, and surprisingly willing to rotate once you free the suspension from its road-car remit. On gravel, that base architecture is workable, but the standard damping runs out of stroke and heat capacity within a single stage. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built to fix exactly that.

This is a stage-rally damper, not a fast-road kit dressed up in mud. It is designed for the high-impact, low-grip realities of gravel and rallycross: long stroke, long springs, and an inverted strut tube that keeps the working hardware shielded from sandstone, silt, and snow. For a 1996-2001 Tiburon being prepared for closed-road events or club-level rally, it is the right starting point.

What this coilover does for your 1996-2001 Hyundai Tiburon

The long stroke is the headline benefit. On gravel, you need the wheel to follow the surface through compression dips and over rocks without packing down and bouncing the car off line – that is what the extended travel buys you. The long spring works with it, soaking up the bigger inputs without binding. The inverted tube layout puts the larger-diameter housing at the bottom, which raises lateral rigidity at the wheel and protects the seals from the abrasive material that ends every gravel stage. For a relatively light front-driven coupe like the Tiburon, that combination keeps the front contact patch loaded under trail-braking and lets the rear stay planted on power out of low-grip corners. Spring rates are set from the rally team’s test programme, so what you fit is what has been run in anger – not a guessed compromise.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed this damper specifically for Rally Racing and Rallycross, the categories the brand identifies as the most aggressive road conditions a shock absorber has to survive. The construction is inverted-tube, chosen so the unit can handle wildly varying surfaces – sandstone, snow, silt – without contamination eating the shaft. Stroke length is extended well past road-car norms, paired with long springs so the suspension can absorb sustained chassis vibration and high-speed impacts on bouncy gravel sections. Under cornering G-force the inverted design resists side-load flex at the wheel end, which keeps geometry stable mid-stage. Spring rates across the range are validated by XYZ Racing’s rally teams during competition, not modelled on a rig. It is a single-purpose tool: built for gravel and rallycross, and specified accordingly.

Fitment for the Hyundai Tiburon (1996-2001)

This kit is specified for the Hyundai Tiburon, chassis HY22, model years 1996-2001 – the first-generation RD coupe. Spring rates and damper lengths are set for the platform as supplied by XYZ Racing. Confirm your exact year and any prior suspension modifications in the configurator before ordering.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
