XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Hyundai EQUUS 2000-2009

The first-generation Hyundai Equus is an unusual rally base – a two-tonne, V8-powered luxury saloon built on a chassis that was never asked to attack a special stage. That is exactly the problem the XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built to solve: keep a heavy, long-wheelbase platform planted over sandstone, silt and the kind of compressions that destroy passenger-car dampers within a single loop.

For a privateer running an Equus on gravel stages or rallycross, the standard saloon damping runs out of travel and heat capacity inside the first proper corner. The Gravel Rally kit replaces that hardware with an inverted-tube, long-stroke design tuned by XYZ’s rally testers – a category of damper, not a styling exercise.

What this coilover does for your 2000-2009 Hyundai Equus

On a heavy rear-drive saloon like the Equus, the felt change is in compression control. The inverted-tube layout puts the larger working diameter at the top of the strut, which stiffens the shaft against side-load when the front axle is dragged sideways by ruts and camber changes. Long stroke means the chassis can take a full-bump hit on a gravel compression without going coil-bound, and long springs keep the wheel loaded as the surface drops away on the other side.

Heat resistance matters more on a car this heavy. The Equus’s mass means each damper does more work per stage mile than it would on a light hatchback, and the Gravel Rally’s construction is sized for that duty cycle. Spring rates are set conservatively for grip on loose surface rather than chasing roll stiffness, so the car still rotates rather than skating wide.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally is the most aggressive damper in the XYZ Racing range, developed specifically for rally and rallycross use where the road surface itself is the variable. The inverted-tube construction is the headline change: the larger tube sits at the top and the thinner shaft works inside it, which protects the seal area from flying debris and gives the strut better resistance to bending loads when the wheel is being thrown sideways by ruts.

Stroke length is deliberately long so the wheel can follow a broken gravel surface without the chassis bottoming out on every yump or compression. The matching springs are long-rate items, set to absorb high-G cornering loads and high-speed impacts from rough surface rather than to chase circuit-style roll control. XYZ states every spring rate in the Gravel Rally programme has been validated by rally teams across sandstone, snow and silt conditions, which is the relevant sample of surfaces a UK or European gravel campaign will actually face.

Fitment for the Hyundai Equus (2000-2009)

This kit fits the first-generation Hyundai Equus, chassis HY29, model years 2000 to 2009. Confirm your chassis code against the VIN plate before ordering, as later second-generation cars (from 2009 on) use a different platform and require a different coilover.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
