XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Honda ACCORD CG1/2/3 (USA) 1998-2002

The CG-chassis Accord was never built with loose surfaces in mind – it’s a torsionally stiff, double-wishbone saloon designed for American freeway miles, and that’s exactly why it makes such an interesting rally base. The body’s resistance to flex gives you something to work with; the standard dampers and short-travel struts give you nothing. The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover replaces both ends with an inverted-tube, long-stroke setup engineered for sandstone, snow and silt – the three surface types XYZ explicitly developed this damper around.

This is not a fast-road kit pressed into stage duty. It’s an inverted-strut rally damper with a long spring and a long-stroke shaft, designed to absorb the chassis vibration that destroys a road-spec coilover within a single recce.

What this coilover does for your 1998-2002 Honda Accord CG1/2/3

The inverted tube layout reverses the wear path – the larger-diameter outer tube becomes the load-bearing element, which is the only construction that survives stone-strike and side-load on a gravel stage. Long stroke means the front struts can extend over a yump without topping out and compress over a compression without coil-binding, which is the failure mode that pitches a CG-chassis Accord into understeer mid-corner. The long-spring geometry lets you run a softer initial rate without the spring going coil-bound under braking. On a 1998-2002 Accord, that translates to a car that stays planted on the bumpy mid-corner sections where the standard McPherson front would already be skipping. The G-force tolerance XYZ specifies for cornering loads is the spec that matters here – a tarmac coilover bottoms out the first time you load it into a third-gear gravel hairpin.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally is XYZ Racing’s dedicated loose-surface damper, developed specifically for Rally Racing and Rally Cross use – which XYZ describes as the most aggressive road conditions in motorsport. Construction is inverted-tube to handle the lateral loading and stone impact a conventional twin-tube cannot survive. The long stroke and long spring combination is engineered to absorb high-frequency chassis vibration, take repeated hits from high-speed bouncy sections, and tolerate the extreme G-forces generated when the car is loaded into a corner on a low-grip surface. The spring rate settings on every Gravel Rally variant – including this Honda Accord CG1/2/3 application – have been validated by working rally teams rather than calculated on a desk. The damper is designed to be set up for one job: gravel-stage rally, plus the Rally Cross variant of that discipline.

Fitment for the Honda Accord CG1/2/3 (USA) (1998-2002)

This kit fits the USA-market Honda Accord on the CG1, CG2 and CG3 chassis codes, covering the 1998-2002 model years. The set replaces the front struts and rear damper-and-spring units with the inverted-tube Gravel Rally hardware. Confirm your chassis code on the door-jamb plate before ordering – this is the USDM CG-chassis fitment, not the European CG/CH or the Japanese CF.

The Gravel Rally is a single-discipline damper – if your Accord is heading onto gravel stages, configure yours below.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
