XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Fiat PUNTO 1993-1999

The Mk1 Fiat Punto is a featherweight on stilts – tall sidewalls, soft factory damping, and a chassis that lifts an inside rear wheel halfway through a tight hairpin. On a sealed tarmac stage that becomes either a liability or a weapon, depending on what you bolt under it. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover is the second option.

This kit is built specifically for sealed-stage tarmac rally use on the FI08 Punto – a car still campaigned in UK historic and clubman tarmac events precisely because it is light, short-wheelbase, and rewards a driver who can carry speed through cambered village sections. The Tarmac Rally damping philosophy is the whole point of the part: control the body without locking the suspension out over the broken kerbs and patched repairs that a real stage road throws at a sub-900kg hatchback.

What this coilover does for your 1993-1999 Fiat Punto

Drop the ride height and the Punto’s centre of gravity moves with it, but it is the damping that changes how the car actually behaves on a recce road. Body roll on turn-in tightens up, the nose stops diving under heavy braking into a junction, and the rear stays planted rather than hopping off-line over a mid-corner ridge. Traction out of slow corners is the bigger gain – the Tarmac Rally valving keeps the inside front loaded long enough to fire the car cleanly out of a second-gear hairpin. On bumpy British B-road tarmac stages, where a road-spring car would skip and wash wide, the chassis tracks the surface and the steering stays connected to the front axle.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

This damper is engineered specifically for tarmac rally work, with valving developed from XYZ Racing’s own rally programme experience. The brief is narrow and the part is tuned to it: absorb the hit when the car crosses a big compression or a broken section of road surface, suppress secondary body movement before it unsettles the chassis, and put the tyre back onto the tarmac quickly enough to keep traction through the load reversal. The result is a damper that takes the jolt out of a stage road’s worst bumps while still controlling the body over fast, flowing sections. The settings are not generic fast-road compromise – every detail is drawn from sealed-stage rally use, where the surface is grippy but rarely smooth.

Fitment for the Fiat Punto (1993-1999)

This kit fits the FI08 Mk1 Punto across the full 1993-1999 production run, covering the hatchback bodyshell from the early 55 and 75 cars through to the later Sporting and GT variants. Chassis code FI08 is the reference – if your Punto pre-dates the Mk2 (Type 188) facelift, this is the correct platform.
