XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Citroen ZX 1991-1998

The Citroen ZX is a chassis that rewards composure on broken surfaces – its long-travel, soft-sprung roots in the Group A and Group N rally programmes of the early 90s left it with a platform that responds well to proper damping rather than brute spring rate. The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover is built for exactly the surface the ZX was raised on: sealed-stage tarmac that looks smooth on a recce note and turns out to be anything but at pace.

For a 1991-1998 ZX being prepped for closed-road rally use or fast B-road work, the Tarmac Rally spec sits in a different place to the Super Sport or Top Sport ranges. It is set up to keep the tyre planted when the surface breaks up mid-corner, not to chase the lowest possible ride height on a billiard-flat circuit.

What this coilover does for your 1991-1998 Citroen ZX

On a ZX the gain is most obvious mid-corner over a poor surface. The Tarmac Rally damping calibration absorbs sharp inputs – cat’s eyes, ridged patches, mid-bend compressions – without unloading the inside front wheel, which is the failure mode that costs the ZX its front-end bite under power. Rebound is controlled enough to stop the long-travel platform from floating after a compression, so the car settles in time for the next input rather than pogo-ing into the next corner. Body control under braking is firmer than the factory CITROEN setup without going stiff-legged, which on the ZX matters because so much of the car’s pace comes from trail-braking the nose into rotation. Traction out of slower corners improves because the rear stays loaded through the squat phase instead of skipping.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally is engineered for sealed-stage rally work and the kind of fast, technical road driving that punishes a road-biased coilover. The damping is calibrated to absorb the impact of uneven pavement – the jolt from a big bump is suppressed at the damper rather than transmitted to the chassis, which lets the tyre keep its contact patch instead of skipping. The settings come from XYZ Racing’s own Tarmac Rally programme, so the valving is built around real stage conditions rather than dyno theory. The brief is vehicle stability under provocation: a platform that stays predictable when the surface stops cooperating, so the driver can commit to a line and trust the car to hold it. Ride height and damping are adjustable so the ZX can be set up for the specific stage profile or road network the car will see.

Fitment for the Citroen ZX (1991-1998)

This kit is built for the Citroen ZX chassis code CI06, covering the full 1991 to 1998 production span. Spring rates, damper lengths and top mount hardware are matched to the ZX’s MacPherson front and trailing-arm rear layout – no fabrication or substitution required.
