XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW 7 SERIES E66 12 CYL 2001-2008

Fit a Tarmac Rally coilover to a V12 E66 and you’re taking on one of the heaviest, longest-wheelbase saloons BMW has ever put through competition use. The factory air suspension on this generation of 7 Series was tuned for cabin isolation, not for holding a near two-tonne car flat over a rutted stage road at speed – and that gap is exactly what this kit is built to close.

The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover swaps that air-sprung compliance for a coil-over damper set up specifically for sealed-stage work, where the surface shifts from smooth tarmac to broken edges and mid-corner camber changes without warning. On a BMW 7 Series E66, that means controlling weight transfer under hard braking into a hairpin and keeping the nose settled through direction changes, rather than letting the standard air struts float and recover late.

What this coilover does for your 2001-2008 BMW 7 Series E66

Swap the E66’s air suspension for this kit and the biggest change you will feel is how the car settles rather than pitches. The Tarmac Rally spec absorbs the impact of broken and uneven surfaces at the wheel instead of passing it through into the body, so the chassis stays composed over the compressions and crests that a stage or a fast B-road throws at a car this length. That matters more on a V12 E66 than on almost anything else in the range, because the extra mass over the front axle means any suspension that’s soft or slow to react shows up immediately as dive under braking and roll into direction changes. Increased tyre traction under load is the direct payoff: more of the contact patch stays loaded through compressions, which is what lets you carry more speed into and out of a corner without the car stepping wide.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Tarmac Rally line around one job: absorbing the impact of uneven pavement without letting that impact travel into the body of the car. The damper is calibrated to soak up sharp jolts from big compressions, ridges and camber changes, while suppressing body shock enough that the tyre stays planted and traction doesn’t spike and drop mid-corner. That’s a different brief to a circuit-only coilover, which can assume a smooth, repeatable racing surface – a tarmac rally stage rarely offers that consistency for more than a few hundred metres at a time. The spring and damper settings on this kit come from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally programme rather than a generic road-going baseline, which is why the stability under load reads as stage-tuned rather than showroom-comfortable. On a BMW 7 Series, that translates into a car that holds its line and its composure well past the point where the factory air suspension would have started to float.

Fitment for the BMW 7 Series E66 (2001-2008)

This kit is built for the BMW 7 Series E66, chassis code BM53, covering the V12-engined cars produced across the 2001 to 2008 model run. As the long-wheelbase 7 Series, the E66’s extra length and weight distribution are accounted for in this kit’s spring and damper spec, so it is matched to this specific chassis rather than adapted from the shorter-wheelbase E65.
