XYZ Racing Pro Racing Gravel/Snow Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E36 6 CYL 1990-1998

The E36’s straight-six weight sits well back over the front axle, and on loose or low-grip surfaces that RWD balance tips into snap oversteer faster than most owners expect once the tarmac runs out. XYZ Racing’s Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover is built around that exact problem: extended front and rear travel keeps the wheels loaded and the car settled when the surface underneath it stops being predictable.

For a BMW 3 Series E36 running gravel stages, rally cross events, or winter road conditions, that extra stroke length is the difference between a wheel that stays in contact with the ground over a compression and one that tops out mid-corner. This is a damper built for movement, not just stiffness.

What this coilover does for your 1990-1998 BMW 3 Series E36

The lengthened front and rear travel gives the E36’s suspension more room to absorb ruts, washboard and compressions without bottoming out, which keeps the contact patch working when a shorter-travel road or circuit set-up would already be unsettled. A larger reservoir of suspension oil and nitrogen gas sits behind that travel, and it matters more here than on a tarmac-only build: sustained running over rough terrain generates heat far faster than smooth circuit laps, and the increased fluid volume delays the point where oil temperature climbs high enough to affect damping consistency. The 3-way adjustment lets you retune the E36’s damping between a loose gravel stage, a snow-covered B-road and a firmer rally cross surface without swapping hardware. Expect the rear axle in particular to feel more settled under power on a loose surface, where the standard E36 set-up tends to step out early.

About the Pro Racing Gravel/Snow coilover

This is a damper built around rally and rally cross use, where wheel travel and long-term thermal stability matter more than outright spring rate. The extended front and rear travel is the headline spec: it creates a bigger working range before the suspension runs out of stroke over rough or undulating ground, which keeps the chassis composed where a shorter-travel unit would crash through its bump stops. Behind that sits an increased volume of suspension oil and nitrogen gas, engineered specifically to reduce the rate at which oil temperature climbs during long, hard use, protecting consistent damping through a full stage or event rather than just a single lap. The 3 external adjustment knobs use a small-hole metering design; over larger bumps this can produce a faint clicking or ticking noise from the damper as oil passes through the restricted passage, which is expected behaviour rather than a fault, and is a known trait of this design running on circuit-style surfaces as well as loose ones.

Fitment for the Bmw 3 SERIES E36 6 CYL (1990-1998)

Built for the six-cylinder E36 3 Series, chassis code BM16, covering the full 1990 to 1998 production run. Front and rear damper lengths are matched to this platform’s stock mounting points, so no chassis modification is needed to fit the extended-travel units.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. With longer travel for both front and rear, it increases bigger buffer distance to keep the car stable. The most advantages of this product is to extend the amount of suspension oil and nitrogen gas which can increase the stability of the shocks and prevent the shock oil temperature too high from being exhausted after long-term use.

Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

Front

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
