XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E30 6 CYL OE φ51 (Front Welding Modified Rear Integrated) 1982-1992

The E30’s live rear axle and long-travel MacPherson front end were never built to survive a tarmac special stage flat out, and that’s exactly the brief for this Tarmac Rally coilover. On a six-cylinder E30, the extra weight sitting ahead of the bulkhead loads the front struts harder under braking into a hairpin than the four-cylinder cars ever see, and the standard front strut housing wasn’t sized for the welded φ51 conversion this kit requires. Fitted correctly, it turns a road-going 3 Series into something that can hold a line over broken tarmac and mid-corner camber changes without the front end diving or the rear stepping wide.

This is a stage-rally application, not a track-day setup – the tuning philosophy is absorbing repeated hard compressions from crests, potholed lanes and camber changes rather than chasing minimum ride height for grip on a smooth circuit. On the rear, where the integrated modification replaces the factory mounting arrangement, the shock is matched to the E30’s semi-trailing arm geometry so axle movement stays controlled when the surface breaks up mid-corner.

What this coilover brings to your 1982-1992 BMW 3 Series E30

Fitted to the 6-cylinder E30, the front φ51 welded conversion gives the strut the bore diameter needed to run a genuinely rally-spec damper rather than a road-biased unit squeezed into the original housing – the difference shows up as controlled compression over the kind of broken, cambered tarmac a rally stage throws at a car that a UK B-road rarely does. The integrated rear kit keeps the semi-trailing arm’s camber and toe behaviour predictable as the axle works, which matters on an E30 because the rear end is what steps out first when the surface turns rough mid-corner. Damper settings are carried over from XYZ’s own tarmac rally programme, so the compression and rebound balance is calibrated for repeated hard hits rather than a single smooth lap. The result on the six-cylinder car specifically is a front end that stays composed under the heavier braking loads the straight-six’s extra weight generates, paired with a rear axle that doesn’t unsettle every time the tarmac gets ragged.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Tarmac Rally line specifically to deal with uneven, broken road surfaces rather than the smooth, consistent tarmac of a closed circuit. The damper is tuned to absorb the impact of potholes, ridges and camber changes without transmitting the full shock through the chassis, which is what lets the tyre keep working instead of skipping across a bump. That shock absorption is the mechanism behind the traction gain – a tyre that stays loaded and in contact with the road puts power and braking force down more consistently than one that’s being bounced. The damping curve is set up to hold the car stable through this kind of repeated disturbance, which is what XYZ Racing means by the handling staying settled rather than getting progressively worse as a stage goes on. Every setting in this range comes directly from XYZ’s own tarmac rally programme rather than being adapted from a circuit-focused product.

Fitment for the BMW 3 Series E30 (1982-1992)

Built for the 6-cylinder E30, chassis code BM06, covering the 1982 to 1992 model years. The front strut requires the welded φ51 conversion specified in this kit’s OE mounting, and the rear uses the integrated modification in place of the standard mounting arrangement – both are prerequisites for correct installation, not optional extras.
