XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Alfa Romeo MITO 2008-2020

The AL16 MITO has always been a more capable rally tool than its city-car billing suggests – short wheelbase, front-drive, and just enough power in 1.4 MultiAir form to reward commitment on a tight tarmac stage. What it doesn’t have from the factory is damping that can handle repeated compressions at speed: the standard setup was signed off for road durability, not for the crested junctions and patchy tarmac surfaces that characterise UK and European closed-road events.

The XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally coilover is built for exactly that gap. Where a road-derived damper struggles to absorb asymmetric compression loads without upsetting the car’s attitude, this kit absorbs the jolt through wheel travel rather than transmitting it to the body shell – keeping the MITO’s front MacPherson struts in consistent contact with the surface and letting the driver carry speed through rather than recover from.

What this coilover does for your 2008-2020 Alfa Romeo MITO

On sealed stages, the MITO’s torsion-beam rear arrangement means the front axle is doing most of the dynamic work – managing load transfer under braking, maintaining traction as the front wheels negotiate rough hairpin approaches, and holding geometry through mid-corner compressions that would otherwise promote understeer. The Tarmac Rally’s calibration prioritises bump absorption over outright rigidity, which translates directly to better tyre contact patch consistency on surfaces with large variations in vertical load. Ride height adjustment lets the crew set the car up to stage conditions and scrutineering requirements. Because the specification originates in competition use rather than road-car development, the damper response reflects what actually works over a rough stage, not what passes a comfort sign-off.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally series sits at the competition end of their coilover range, calibrated specifically for sealed-surface motorsport rather than road or circuit use. The core of its design is a damper capable of absorbing the kind of big impacts tarmac stage running produces – blind crests, poorly surfaced junctions, compression apexes where the car meets the road harshly at speed. Rather than stiffening the spring rate to prevent body movement, the calibration is tuned to suppress body shock and dissipate those hits so the chassis recovers quickly and tyre traction is maintained through the exit. The full specification – spring rates, damper response, ride-height range – has been developed from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally running. These are not road settings adapted for competition; the competition application is the starting point.

Fitment for the Alfa Romeo MITO (2008-2020)

This kit covers the Alfa Romeo MITO AL16 platform across the full 2008-2020 production run. The MITO was built on the AL16 throughout its lifecycle with no mid-cycle platform change, but confirm your build date against your V5C or chassis identification plate before ordering, particularly for very early or very late examples.
