XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Volkswagen BORA φ50 (Modified Rear Integrated) 1998-2005

Loose gravel punishes a front-heavy, transversely-engined saloon like the Bora harder than any tarmac stage. The nose dives into ruts under braking, the rear steps out over crests, and a road-spec damper runs out of usable travel long before the stage does. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover kit for the BORA φ50 is built around that specific failure point: an inverted-tube design paired with long-stroke, long-spring hardware sized to keep working through repeated high-speed compressions rather than bottoming out halfway down the special.

This is the Modified Rr Integrated fitment, meaning the rear axle has been set up to accept the coilover properly rather than adapting a road damper into a space it was never meant for. It’s aimed at gravel-stage and rallycross running on the Bora, not fast-road use – sand, snow, silt and washboard surfaces are the design brief, not smooth B-roads.

What this coilover kit does for your 1998-2005 Volkswagen BORA

The Mk4-platform Bora carries its transverse engine ahead of the front axle, so on broken surfaces that weight transfers hard into the front dampers under braking and trail-braking into a corner. The long-stroke design gives the front end enough travel to follow a rutted surface without the wheel losing contact, keeping steering response consistent as the car crosses from tarmac onto loose stage. At the rear, the modified integration lets the long spring and shock absorb chassis vibration transmitted up through the axle from repeated impacts, rather than passing every hit straight into the body. The inverted-tube construction also resists side-loading better than a conventional tube under the lateral forces a saloon generates crossing cambered gravel or holding a four-wheel drift through a fast bend. Together, the setup is built to bear sustained G-force through corners without the damping falling off as the stage goes on.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed this damper specifically for rally and rallycross use, where road conditions are the most aggressive a competition car will see. The shock absorber becomes the single most important component on a gravel stage, so the kit uses an inverted-tube layout engineered to cope with changing surfaces – sandstone, snow, silt – within the same event. Long stroke and long spring travel absorb chassis vibration and the repeated hard impacts of a high-speed bouncy road, while the unit is built to bear extreme cornering loads without losing control of the wheel. Every spring rate offered in this kit has been set through testing by a rally racing team, rather than derived from road-car data, so the rates reflect what actually holds up over a stage rather than a single smooth test lap.

Fitment for the Volkswagen BORA (1998-2005)

This kit is built for the Volkswagen BORA φ50, chassis code VO03-A, covering model years 1998 to 2005, with the Modified Rr Integrated rear setup. Confirm your car matches this chassis code and year range before ordering, as the rear integration is specific to this fitment.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
