XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Nissan MAXIMA A31 (OE Rear WISHBONE) 1989-1994

The A31 Maxima’s rear wishbone axle was set up by Nissan for a quiet, planted motorway ride, not for a rally special stage that throws crests, mid-corner compressions and cambered tarmac at the car in quick succession. On loose, damp or patched Group N stages, a soft factory rear end lets the axle wallow under load, costing traction exactly when the driver needs the rear to stay settled through a compression.

XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally coilover kit replaces that setup on the Maxima A31, built specifically for sealed-stage rallying rather than road use or circuit lapping. It’s the coilover to spec if the car’s job is stringing together fast tarmac sections back to back, where the suspension has to shrug off a rough stage surface without unsettling the chassis.

What this coilover brings to your 1989-1994 Nissan Maxima A31

The damper is calibrated to absorb the impact of an uneven road surface rather than transmit it straight into the chassis, which matters on a stage where the tarmac quality can change from smooth to broken within a few hundred metres. Big hits and sharp bumps are taken up by the damper rather than the body, which keeps the Maxima’s rear wishbone axle working the way it was designed to rather than skipping or hopping over rough sections. That control at the contact patch is what converts into usable traction under acceleration out of a hairpin or through a fast, cambered right-hander. The net effect on this chassis is a rear axle that stays composed through direction changes instead of pattering over imperfections, which is the difference between a driver who can commit to the next braking point and one who’s still catching the car from the last compression.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed the Tarmac Rally line specifically for sealed-surface rally use, where the damper has to deal with uneven pavement, expansion joints and broken edges at speed without losing composure. The valving is set to soak up large hits without the body kicking back, so the tyre stays loaded and in contact with the road rather than skipping across it. That translates directly into more usable grip and a more stable, predictable car through fast direction changes, which is the point of the exercise on a stage rather than a circuit. The settings built into this kit come from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally programme, carried over from car to car rather than derived from road-going damper tunes.
