XYZ Racing Super Sport Coilovers — Mitsubishi STARION welding 1982-1990

The Starion’s MT34 chassis was built around a live rear axle and a turbocharged four sending drive through it, which means ride quality and axle control on rough tarmac have always been a compromise on standard dampers. The Super Sport coilover replaces that ageing setup with 36-way adjustable damping and a height-adjustable perch, giving you a way to tune the car for the roads you actually drive rather than the ones Mitsubishi’s engineers assumed in 1982.

This is a fast-road and weekend track spec – stiffer and more controlled than a comfort-biased kit, but built to still be liveable on the way to the circuit. For a rear-drive turbo coupe carrying its weight nose-heavy over that live axle, getting the damping right at both ends changes how confidently you can put power down out of a corner.

What this coilover does for your 1982-1990 Mitsubishi Starion Welding

Ride height adjustment lets you correct the Starion’s factory stance, which sagged over four decades on cars that are only now getting proper suspension attention again. The 36 damping positions cover a wide enough range to soften the ride for a motorway run to a Sunday track day, then firm everything up before a morning on circuit – without swapping parts. On a live-axle car, damper control directly affects how well the rear stays planted under acceleration and how much axle hop you feel over mid-corner bumps; dialling in more low-speed compression keeps the rear composed when the turbo four’s torque hits. Reduced body roll under the Super Sport’s firmer base rates also sharpens turn-in on a chassis that, in standard form, telegraphs its age through vague front-end response. The net effect is a Starion that turns in with more purpose and settles faster after a mid-corner bump, rather than continuing to move once the input’s already been made.

About the Super Sport coilover

XYZ Racing’s Super Sport damper was developed to solve the discomfort that comes from running a stiff damper on imperfect British roads – the usual trade-off with any performance suspension. The 36-way adjustment range is the mechanism for that: rather than fixing a single compromise setting, it lets the same damper cover comfortable daily use and a genuinely firmer track setting depending on where the adjuster sits. Ride height is independently adjustable via the threaded body, so stance and corner weighting can be set without touching the damping curve. XYZ Racing builds this range for exactly the use case a Starion owner has – a car that still gets driven on the road but also sees a track day now and again – rather than a single-purpose race damper that makes no sense outside a circuit.
