XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Mitsubishi EVO7-9 4WD 2002-2008

The MT19-chassis Evo’s rally-bred 4WD platform puts enormous load through all four corners under trail-braking and mid-corner throttle, and the factory dampers were tuned for a different era of tyre and boost. XYZ Racing’s Top Sport coilover raises the damping and spring response over standard road settings, giving the Evo 7, 8 and 9 a chassis that can absorb a cross-country blast one weekend and a track day the next without the compromises of a full race setup.

This is the occasional-track-day-plus-daily spec: firmer than a comfort-focused Street kit, but built to stay liveable on UK B-roads between sessions. On a car whose active centre diff and rear limited-slip are already doing serious work distributing torque, controlling body movement at all four corners matters more than on a 2WD equivalent.

What this coilover does for your 2002-2008 Mitsubishi EVO7-9 4WD

Damping and spring rate on the Top Sport kit are stepped up 30 to 50 percent over street settings, which keeps the Evo’s nose and rear axle settled when you’re loading the diff hard out of a hairpin instead of letting the standard dampers wallow and hand traction to the tyre’s sidewall. The increase in spring rate – roughly 2kg/mm over stock – also does the job of absorbing sharper hits from broken tarmac and kerb strikes without transmitting the full jolt into the shock body, which on the Evo’s rally-honed platform means less shock to the bushes and mounts over a full track day. Suppressing that shock body movement keeps the contact patch working rather than skipping, so the AWD system has consistent grip to distribute rather than fighting a chassis that’s still settling from the last input. The net result for a 2002-2008 Evo 7-9 owner is a car that turns in with less roll, puts power down earlier out of slow corners, and still rides acceptably on the drive home.

About the Top Sport coilover

XYZ Racing built the Top Sport line directly from its own Top Sport race programme, carrying settings developed there into a kit sold for aggressive road and track-day use rather than pure competition. The uplift in damping and spring rate over street tunes is deliberate – enough to control a heavier, harder-driven car through big compressions and sustained cornering loads, without tipping into the harshness of a full race coilover. Construction follows XYZ’s coilover platform standard, with the spring and damper rates calibrated as a pair so the increased spring load doesn’t outrun what the damper can control on rebound. The intent, per XYZ’s own Top Sport development work, is stability under hard driving – a chassis that holds its line rather than one that merely rides firmer. For a platform like the Evo, where the 4WD system rewards a settled, predictable chassis, that stability-first tuning philosophy is the point of the kit rather than a side effect.
