XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Mitsubishi EVO1-3 4WD 1992-1996

The Evo1-3’s homologation-special chassis was signed off for Group A rally before UK buyers ever saw one on a dealer forecourt, and its suspension geometry still expects the abuse of a loose surface rather than a smooth B-road. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover for the Mitsubishi EVO1-3 4WD is built around that reality: long-travel dampers and a spring that can take a compression hit without bottoming out mid-stage.

This is the spec for owners running their Evo1-3 on gravel stages or rallycross, not fast-road track days. Where a Circuit Master or Top Sport kit chases lateral grip on tarmac, the Gravel Rally kit is tuned to keep the wheel in contact with a surface that changes metre to metre – sand, washed-out ruts, loose stone – while the 4WD system tries to put power down through all four corners.

What this coilover does for your 1992-1996 Mitsubishi EVO1-3 4WD

Fit this to a 1992-1996 Mitsubishi EVO1-3 4WD and the biggest change you’ll feel is how much travel is left before the suspension runs out of ideas. The long-stroke damper and matching long spring soak up a G-force compression on a fast bend without kicking the chassis sideways, which matters on a car whose short wheelbase and 4WD hardware already want to rotate under trail braking. Big hits – washboard, a hidden rut, a heavy landing after a crest – get absorbed into the damper rather than transmitted into the chassis and the driver’s hands. On a road-legal Evo1-3 that still sees the odd stage or rallycross weekend, that’s the difference between a car that skips across a rough section and one that stays planted through it.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Gravel Rally coilover specifically for rally and rallycross use, where the road surface is more punishing than anything else in competition – sandstone, standing snow, loose silt, sometimes all in the same stage. The damper uses an inverted tube layout, mounting the piston rod down through the body rather than the conventional way round, which keeps the working oil column stable even when the car is airborne or landing hard. A long stroke and a correspondingly long spring give the suspension enough travel to absorb chassis vibration and take the hit from a high-speed bouncy section without the spring coil-binding or the damper topping out. Spring rates across the range were set using data from an actual rally racing team rather than a dyno guess, so the base rate is already biased toward holding the car flat under the kind of cornering G-force a gravel stage generates rather than a smooth circuit.

Fitment for the Mitsubishi EVO1-3 4WD (1992-1996)

This kit is built for the MT17 chassis – the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I, II and III, 1992 to 1996, in its 4WD turbo configuration. Confirm your car sits within that generation before ordering; the Evo1-3’s suspension mounting points and geometry are specific to this chassis code and don’t carry over to the later Evo IV-onward platform.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

Front

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
