XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Infiniti Q45 (Y33) welding 1997-2001

The Y33 Q45 is a near-two-tonne rear-drive saloon with a long wheelbase and a V8 up front, not the sort of car anyone associates with a gravel stage. That’s exactly why it needs a damper built for one. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover for this chassis is a welded-in kit – the lower mounts are fixed directly to the Q45’s original strut housings rather than clamped to a bolt-on top hat, which is how rally builders keep the geometry from shifting when a heavy Y33 is landing hard through ruts and washouts at speed.

This is not a road or track spring-and-shock set wearing a rally label. It’s the Gravel Rally spec specifically, built around the reality that on loose, broken ground the damper carries more of the car’s survival than any other single part, and a Q45 running that terrain needs its suspension treated accordingly.

What this coilover does for your 1997-2001 Infiniti Q45

The inverted tube damper construction keeps the heavier working end of the shock up and out of the debris path, which matters when a Y33 is throwing sandstone, silt or standing water up into the wheel arch on every stage. Long stroke travel and a correspondingly long spring give the suspension somewhere to go when the road surface stops being flat, soaking up chassis vibration on washboard sections instead of transmitting it straight into the cabin. That extra travel is also what lets the car bear the extreme G-force loading a heavy saloon generates mid-corner on gravel, where body roll and weight transfer are both larger than on a lighter rally car. The spring rates fitted to this kit were set by testing with an actual rally racing team rather than calculated on a road-car baseline, so the Q45 sits on rates proven under the load a full-weight saloon puts through them.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed the Gravel Rally range specifically for rally and rallycross use, where road conditions are the most aggressive the company builds for across its entire coilover line-up. The inverted tube layout was chosen to cope with a wide spread of surface types in the same event – sandstone one stage, snow or silt the next – without the damper losing consistency between them. Stroke length and spring length are both extended beyond road-going norms so the suspension can absorb chassis vibration and sustained high-speed bouncing without bottoming out or losing damping control. Every spring rate offered in the range has been validated by a rally racing team rather than left as a theoretical figure, which is the difference between a coilover that survives one stage and one built to run a full event.

Fitment for the Infiniti Q45 (Y33) (1997-2001)

This kit is built for the Infiniti Q45 (Y33), chassis code Y33, across the 1997 to 2001 production run. Because it’s a welded-in design, fitment is to the Q45’s factory strut housing rather than a bolt-on top mount, so installation should be carried out by a fabricator comfortable with welded suspension work.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
