XYZ Racing Drag Racing Coilovers — BMW 8 SERIES E31 12 CYL φ55 welding 1990-1999

The E31 850i carries its V12 a long way forward of the front axle, and that nose-heavy layout is exactly what a launch has to fight. Get the weight transfer wrong off the line and the rear tyres spin loose while the nose dives; get it right and the car hooks up and drives. The XYZ Racing Drag Racing coilover for the BMW 8 Series is built around that specific problem.

This is a straight-line setup, not a circuit compromise. Where a road or track coilover splits its damping and geometry across corner entry, mid-corner and exit, this kit is tuned for one manoeuvre repeated: a clean 0-400m run, weight loaded rearward, tyre contact patch maximised, and the car kept flat through the gears.

What this coilover does for your 1990-1999 BMW 8 Series

Fit this to an E31 and the immediate difference is how the car settles under hard acceleration. The kit lets you shift static weight bias toward the rear axle, which puts more load through the driven tyres at the moment of launch rather than leaving that mass sitting over the nose. More compression at the rear tyre means more contact patch, which is what actually converts torque from that V12 into forward motion instead of wheelspin. The reduction in wheel-spin duration matters twice over on a heavy 850i or 850Ci: less time spinning means less time the front end is unloaded and vague, and a shorter idle phase off the line is the difference between a run that hooks up cleanly and one that’s already lost before second gear.

About the Drag Racing coilover

This range is built specifically for 0-400m drag work across FWD, RWD and 4WD platforms, which is a broader remit than a fast-road or trackday kit needs to cover. The core idea is instant, controllable weight transfer: the coilover lets you bias ride height and preload front-to-rear so the driven wheels load up hard the instant the clutch or launch control releases. That extra compression at the drive tyre is what shortens the "idle" window before the tyre stops slipping and starts gripping, and it’s what keeps the car settled and predictable as speed builds through a run. For an RWD, V12-fronted platform like the E31, that rear-bias adjustability is the whole point of the kit.

Fitment for the BMW 8 Series E31 (1990-1999)

Built for the BMW 8 Series E31 (chassis code BM114) across the full 1990-1999 production run, covering the V12-engined cars. This kit uses a Φ55 welded strut construction rather than a bolt-in perch, so fitment is a fabrication job for a shop set up for weld-in coilover installs.

The coilovers are specially designed for 0~400 drag racing such as FWD, RWD or 4WD models. The setting allows vehicle to change the front and rear weight according to the transmission wheel in instant driving, and force the transmission tire having greater compression, which can reduce the idle time of wheel and improve the stability of the vehicle under high speed.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

Front

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
