XYZ Racing Pro Racing Drift Spec Coilovers — BMW 8 SERIES E31 12 CYL φ55 welding 1990-1999

The E31’s V12 sits a long way forward of the front axle, and on the 850i and 850CSi that mass loads the nose hard the moment you trail-brake into a corner, working against the sustained, held-angle slide that competitive drifting demands. XYZ Racing built the Pro Racing Drift Spec coilover specifically to counter that – lowering the centre of gravity, sharpening the weight transfer, and giving the driver the front-end response needed to initiate and hold an angle in a car that was never designed with drifting in mind.

This is a φ55 welding-type kit, meaning the spring perch is welded to the strut body rather than clamped, giving a fixed, race-grade ride height once set rather than a bolt-on compromise. For an E31 built between 1990 and 1999, that’s the difference between a suspension that merely lowers the car and one that actually changes how the 8 Series behaves at the limit.

What this coilover does for your 1990-1999 BMW 8 Series E31 12 CYL Φ55 Welding

Drop the ride height correctly and the 8 Series stops fighting you on turn-in – the reduced nose lift under braking means the front tyres load progressively instead of all at once, which is exactly what you need to set an angle rather than just spin the rears. The 3-way adjustment knobs let you separate low-speed compression from rebound, so you can run the front stiff enough to resist dive under trail-braking while keeping the rear compliant enough to catch and hold a slide through direction changes. On a car this heavy – the V12 850i is no lightweight – that separation between front and rear damping behaviour matters more than outright spring rate. Bump stroke is set up specifically for repeated hard direction changes rather than one-off cornering loads, which is the difference between a coilover that survives a session and one that’s built for it.

About the Pro Racing Drift Spec coilover

XYZ Racing developed this line purely around drift discipline, not as a general track coilover pressed into service. The design is built to stabilise the body of the car through high-speed direction changes so the driver can hold a clean angle rather than fight the chassis for it, and once the ride height is set correctly with the right bump stroke, the difference in how the car controls a slide is immediately obvious behind the wheel. Each unit uses 3 adjustment knobs feeding small-bore oil passages – a deliberate design choice for fine-grained damping control, though it does mean you may hear a faint noise from the oil moving through those smaller passages over sharp bumps. That’s a known and expected characteristic of this build, not a fault, and it has no bearing on performance; the kit is set up for circuit-track use where bump absorption is secondary to holding a drift line lap after a session, corner after corner.

Fitment for the BMW 8 Series E31 12 CYL Φ55 Welding (1990-1999)

Fits the BMW 8 Series E31 12-cylinder cars built from 1990 to 1999, specified with a φ55 shock body and a welded spring perch rather than a clamp-type collar. Confirm your car sits within this V12 E31 range before ordering, as the welding-type construction is matched to this specific shock diameter.

This suspension is especially designed for Drift racing purpose. With its special design, it helps the racers stabilize the vehicle body while in high speed turning in order to make a perfect angle. It can also enhance drifting performance. After lowering the ride height with proper bump stroke, you will realize how we made the drift controlling to the excellent condition.

Because its 3 adjustment knobs with small oil hole design, when driving through big bumps, the coilover oil will go through small passage which might cause some small noise. This is normal situation. This product is made for circuit tracks and there will be no concern for bumps on the tracks.

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
