XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E60 6 CYL 2003-2010

The E60 5 Series was built for autobahn cruising, not sand washes and rutted forest tracks – which is exactly the gap XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover is built to close. A big saloon with a straight-six hung out over the front axle needs a damper that can absorb repeated hard compressions without the nose diving into the next rut, and that’s the job this kit is built around.

For a 2003-2010 6-cylinder E60 being prepped for gravel-stage or rally-cross work, standard-length OE strut travel runs out the moment the surface gets properly broken. This kit swaps that for inverted-tube construction with a long-stroke, long-spring layout that keeps the wheel working through the kind of vertical hits a 5 Series was never engineered to take.

What this coilover does for your 2003-2010 BMW 5 Series

Fitted to the E60, the extended stroke lets the axle track ruts and washboard without the chassis slamming into the bump stops the way a road-biased setup would. Inverted damper tube construction keeps oil control consistent even when the shock is working continuously over broken ground, rather than the occasional pothole a road car sees. Because the spring rates are set for cornering load as well as vertical compression, the car holds its line through a fast gravel sweeper instead of wallowing on the outside spring. Owners running the straight-six E60 on loose surfaces get a chassis that settles quickly after a landing or a hard compression, instead of continuing to pitch into the next section of track.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Gravel Rally line specifically for stage and rally-cross use, where the surface underneath the tyre changes character every few hundred metres and the damper still has to keep doing its job. The inverted-tube layout is aimed squarely at that inconsistency – built to hold up whether the stage turns to loose sandstone, packed snow, or fine silt. Stroke length and spring length are both extended well beyond a road-going coilover, so the unit can soak up continuous chassis vibration rather than a single sharp hit, and keep working when the car lands off a crest at speed. Valving is set to cope with the G-forces generated mid-corner as well as the vertical loads coming up through the surface, so the same damper controlling compression is also managing body roll. XYZ Racing’s rally team sets the spring rates on actual stages rather than on a rig, which is where the rates supplied with this kit come from.

Fitment for the BMW 5 Series E60 (2003-2010)

This kit is built for the 6-cylinder E60 5 Series, chassis code BM40, across the 2003 to 2010 production run. Confirm your car sits within that build window and carries a straight-six engine before ordering, as mounting hardware is specific to this fitment.

If you’re building a 6-cylinder E60 for stage or rally-cross work, this is the damper platform the rest of the car’s chassis prep should be built around – configure yours below.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
