The M60 V8 sitting ahead of the front axle gives the E34 a nose-heavy character that a tarmac coilover never has to think about, but a gravel stage does. Every compression event – a rut, a jump landing, a sudden dip cut by last year’s rally car – drives that extra weight straight into the strut, and on loose surfaces the damper has less grip underneath it to soak up the hit. XYZ Racing built this Gravel Rally coilover around that specific problem rather than around lap times.
This is a φ55 welding-fitment kit, meaning the strut body is welded into the existing housing on the 8-cylinder 530i/540i-generation 5 Series rather than bolted in as a cartridge swap. It replaces the factory unit with a long-stroke damper designed to keep working when the road surface itself keeps changing.
What this coilover does for your 1987-1995 BMW 5 Series E34 8 CYL φ55 Welding
The extended stroke length gives the front end enough travel to absorb a hard landing without the strut topping or bottoming out mid-stage, which matters more on a heavy V8 saloon than on a lighter rally car. Longer springs let the axle articulate further before the wheel unloads completely, so traction on loose gravel and silt holds even when the surface drops away under one corner of the car. The inverted-tube damper body keeps the working seal up and away from splash and grit thrown up off an unsealed road, so damping force stays consistent from the start of a stage to the end rather than degrading as dirt works into the unit. Under hard cornering loads the E34’s chassis and subframe move more than a modern platform’s would, and the damping here is set up to control that movement rather than fight it outright, keeping the nose settled through direction changes on a surface with constantly shifting grip.
About the Gravel Rally coilover
XYZ Racing built this range specifically for rally and rally-cross use rather than adapting a road or circuit damper for the job, because loose-surface competition puts a harder demand on a shock absorber than almost any other motorsport discipline. The inverted-tube construction is there to cope with sand, snow-pack and silt without losing consistency as the surface underneath changes stage to stage. Stroke length and spring length are both extended over a standard coilover so the unit can absorb chassis vibration and take repeated hard hits from high-speed, uneven ground without the damper running out of travel. That extra length also has to control the extreme cornering loads a rally car generates when it’s thrown sideways into a bend at speed. Every spring rate offered in this range has been set by XYZ’s rally racing team against real stage conditions rather than calculated on a bench, so the rates on offer reflect what has actually worked under competition load.
Fitment for the BMW 5 Series E34 (1987-1995)
This kit is built for the 8-cylinder E34 5 Series (chassis code BM13) across the full 1987-1995 production run, using a φ55 welding fitment that requires the strut body to be welded into the car’s existing housing rather than a direct cartridge replacement. Confirm your 5 Series carries the V8 M60 engine before ordering, as this fitment is specific to the 8-cylinder variant rather than the 6-cylinder E34 range.

Top mounts included with your kit
Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.
Front
Pillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
Hardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
Rear
AluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
