XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E34 6 CYL φ55 welding 1987-1995

An E34 5 Series carries a longitudinal inline six well forward of the front axle, so before you’ve even reached loose ground the car already leans nose-first into every load change. Take that weight bias onto a rally stage and every corner entry becomes a fight between chassis vibration, wheel travel and G-force rather than outright grip. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover is built around that exact problem, not fast-road comfort.

For a BM12-chassis 5 Series being prepped for stage work or rally-cross, the priority shifts from ride quality to keeping the wheel in contact with broken ground at speed. This kit answers that with long-stroke travel and an inverted damper body engineered to survive repeated high-speed compression on sand, snow-pack and silt rather than smooth circuit asphalt.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1995 BMW 5 Series

On an E34 running rough stages, the biggest gains are in wheel control rather than outright stiffness. The long-stroke damper and matching long spring soak up chassis vibration that a standard-length unit can’t absorb, so the multi-link rear axle stays planted through compressions instead of skipping across ruts. Under trail-braking into a loose hairpin, that extra travel keeps the nose-heavy six-cylinder E34 loading the front tyres progressively rather than diving and bottoming out on a sharp compression. Through fast, bumpy sweepers the inverted tube construction resists the side loading and G-force spikes that flex a conventional strut, so steering response holds up across a full stage rather than fading as the dampers heat up.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed the Gravel Rally coilover specifically for rally and rally-cross use, where road surface is about as aggressive as motorsport gets – the damper is doing more work here than in almost any other discipline. It uses an inverted tube layout so the internals cope with the full spread of loose-surface conditions, from sand and silt to snow-pack, without taking the beating a conventional upright tube would under that kind of repeated impact. Stroke and spring length are both extended well beyond a standard road-biased coilover, which is what lets the damper absorb chassis vibration from high-speed compressions and still keep the car controlled under the extreme cornering G-force that loose surfaces generate. Spring rates on this kit were set and validated by an active rally racing team rather than picked off a generic road-car chart, so the base setup already reflects what holds up over a stage rather than a theoretical estimate.

Fitment for the BMW 5 Series (1987-1995)

This kit is specced for the BM12-chassis BMW 5 Series E34 with the 6-cylinder engine, covering the full 1987 to 1995 production run. The φ55 damper body pairs with a welded top-mount fitment rather than a bolt-in top hat, the mounting method most rally builders use on an E34 to cope with the sustained loads a gravel stage puts through the strut tower. Confirm your car matches the 6-cylinder E34 spec before ordering, as this fitment is chassis-specific.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

Front

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
