XYZ Racing Racing Spec Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E34 6 CYL φ55 welding 1987-1995

The E34 5 Series carries its straight-six well forward of the front axle, and on a car built for autobahn cruising rather than apex-hunting, that mass transfers hard through soft factory bushing and long-travel damping the moment you load the front end into a corner. XYZ Racing’s Racing Spec coilover replaces that geometry with a φ55 welded-body damper built to hold the E34’s nose down under trail-braking and keep the rear axle settled when you get back on the throttle mid-corner.

This is the top-tier option in the range, built for serious track and time-attack use rather than a firmer daily ride. It exists to let an E34 owner take a genuinely heavy, genuinely old executive saloon onto a circuit and have the chassis behave like something twenty years newer.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1995 BMW 5 Series

Fit this to a 1987-1995 E34 and the first thing you’ll notice is how much less the nose dives under brakes – the damper’s control over that six-cylinder mass means the car stays flatter into the corner instead of loading the outside front tyre before you’ve even turned in. Through direction changes, the reduced body roll lets you carry more speed on part-throttle without the rear axle stepping out of line, which matters on a chassis this size and this old. The φ55 welded construction is built to take repeated heat cycling from a full track session without the damping fading lap after that first hot lap, and the wide adjustment range lets you trim the balance between front and rear grip as tyres go off through a session. For a car this heavy, that kind of consistency under load is the difference between a coilover that survives one track day and one that’s actually a track tool.

About the Racing Spec coilover

XYZ Racing developed the Racing Spec line directly from circuit racing programmes, including work done at WTCC level, and the settings on this damper reflect that background rather than a generic fast-road tune. The φ55 body is a larger-diameter, welded construction chosen specifically for the loads and heat that circuit use generates, giving it more structural margin than a bolted or smaller-bore design under sustained hard use. Where a car has already had significant chassis or drivetrain upgrades – bigger brakes, a different subframe setup, aggressive alignment – XYZ Racing can build a custom-specification damper around that exact configuration rather than a one-size-fits-all valving. To get that custom build, you’d supply full details of what’s already been changed on the car and which circuit it’s intended to run, and the shock absorber is then specified around that brief. It’s the same approach used for cars already built to A-class racing specification, scaled down to whatever level of modification your E34 is actually at.

Fitment for the BMW 5 Series E34 (1987-1995)

This kit is built for the BMW 5 Series E34, chassis code BM12, across the 1987 to 1995 production run, specifically the 6-cylinder φ55 welding variant. Confirm your car matches this six-cylinder E34 specification before ordering, as damper geometry differs from four-cylinder variants of the same chassis.
