XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — BMW 5 SERIES E34 8 CYL φ51 welding 1987-1995

An E34 with the 8-cylinder M60 under the bonnet carries real weight over the front axle, and on loose surfaces that weight transfers hard the moment the road stops being smooth. Compression events on a rally stage arrive faster and harder than anything the factory strut was asked to deal with in 1987, and a saloon this size needs a damper that can absorb repeated big hits without packing down.

The Gravel Rally spec is built specifically for that brief. It is not a road-biased kit dressed up for stage work, it is a long-travel, high-abuse damper meant to keep the V8 E34 planted through ruts, crests and washboard sections where a standard-travel coilover would bottom out or lose damping consistency after a handful of hard hits.

What this coilover does for your 1987-1995 Bmw 5 Series E34 8 CYL φ51 Welding

Fitted to the V8 E34, the long-stroke design gives the front axle somewhere to go when the car lands nose-first off a crest, rather than transmitting that hit straight into the chassis. The inverted tube layout keeps side-loading under control through fast direction changes, which matters on a heavy saloon that wants to keep moving straight when the surface underneath it doesn’t. Spring rates are set up for the loads a gravel stage actually generates rather than a fast-road compromise, so the car settles rather than skips across washboard and small-radius ruts. The φ51 welding-type construction ties the damper body directly into the chassis for a fixed, rally-spec mounting rather than a bolt-in perch, which is what this kind of repeated high-G use demands.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed this damper around the reality that a rally-cross or rally-gravel stage is the harshest surface condition any of its coilover ranges has to survive. The inverted tube construction is there to cope with a spread of surface types in the same event, from loose sandstone through to snow or silt, without the damper losing its composure as conditions change underfoot. A long stroke paired with a long spring lets the unit soak up chassis vibration and absorb aggressive hits from high-speed, broken surfaces, and it is built to hold together through the extreme G-force loading generated when the car turns hard on loose ground. XYZ Racing’s own team sets the spring rate specification against data from actual rally racing use rather than a bench estimate, so the rates supplied reflect what has held up in competition rather than a theoretical setup.

Fitment for the Bmw 5 Series E34 8 CYL φ51 Welding (1987-1995)

This Gravel Rally kit is built for the V8-engined E34, chassis code BM11, covering the 1987 to 1995 production run. The φ51 welding fitment means the strut body is welded into the chassis rather than bolted to a stock top mount, so this is a fixed rally-spec installation rather than a swap-in road kit. Confirm the 8-cylinder engine code against your V5 before ordering, as the 4- and 6-cylinder E34 variants use different mounting hardware.

This is a fixed-spec rally build for a car that already carries the weight to punish a weak damper, so get the chassis code and cylinder count confirmed and configure yours below.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear
