XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E36 6 CYL (Modified Rear Integrated) 1990-1998

The E36’s rally pedigree runs deep – this generation of 3 Series was campaigned on gravel stages across Europe through the 1990s, and its near-even front-rear weight split, combined with the straight-six’s long nose over the front axle, makes the chassis behave predictably once you understand how to load it. On loose surfaces that predictability lives or dies with the dampers: too soft and the car wallows through compressions, too stiff and it skips across ruts instead of tracking through them.

XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover is built for that second problem. Long-stroke, long-spring construction gives the rear end the travel it needs to stay planted over rutted, washboard gravel without crashing into its bump stops under braking into a hairpin, while an inverted-tube layout keeps the working parts of the damper shielded from the sandstone, snow and silt that would eat a standard road-going strut.

What this coilover does for your 1990-1998 Bmw 3 Series E36

Fit this coilover to your 1990-1998 E36 and the car stops skittering when the surface underneath it changes. The extended stroke length soaks up the big single-hit compressions a gravel stage throws at a six-cylinder E36 – crest jumps, washouts, sudden ruts – without the rear axle bottoming out the way a shortened road coilover would. Spring rates carried over from XYZ’s rally programme mean the chassis settles quickly after a landing rather than continuing to pitch, which matters on this platform because the inline-six’s weight over the front axle already wants to keep diving under braking into a loose corner. The inverted-tube design also means grit from sandstone or silt stages has less opportunity to work past the seals over a full event, holding the damping consistent from the first stage to the last.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ developed the Gravel Rally coilover specifically for rally and rallycross use, where surface conditions change corner to corner and the damper works harder than in almost any other motorsport application. The inverted-tube construction was chosen to cope with the full range of loose-surface conditions a stage throws up – sand, snow-pack and silt all load a tyre differently, and the shock absorber has to keep its seals and internals protected from all three. A long stroke paired with a long spring gives the damper the travel to absorb chassis vibration from washboard sections and to bear the extreme G-loads generated mid-corner without topping or bottoming out. Every spring rate in the range was set using data from an XYZ-affiliated rally team rather than derived from road or circuit testing, so the base tune reflects what a gravel-stage car actually needs before you start adjusting it yourself.

Fitment for the Bmw 3 Series E36 6 CYL (Modified Rr Integrated) (1990-1998)

This kit is built for the BMW 3 Series E36 six-cylinder cars – chassis code BM17 – across the full 1990 to 1998 production run, with a modified, integrated rear mount to suit the six-cylinder rear subframe. Confirm your car falls within that build window and carries the six-cylinder rear end before ordering, as the mounting hardware is specific to this configuration.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Pillow ball top mountPillow ballPSolid pillow-ball (spherical bearing) upper — chosen for rigidity and precise camber adjustment, the sharpest steering response of the options.
