XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E36 6 CYL (Modified Rear Integrated) 1990-1998

The E36’s six-cylinder nose carries real weight over the front axle, and on a sealed rally stage that mass wants to keep travelling in a straight line long after the road has turned. XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally coilover is built around that problem: crests, compressions and mid-corner surface changes at rally pace, not a smoothed-out circuit apex.

Where a fast-road or track-day set-up is tuned for consistent, flat tarmac, this kit is calibrated for the opposite – broken camber, patched repairs and the odd unexpected dip that a stage road throws up between recce and run. The multi-link rear end fitted to the six-cylinder E36 already gives the chassis more composure than the E30 it replaced; this coilover is built to exploit that rather than fight it.

What this coilover does for your 1990-1998 BMW 3 Series E36 6 CYL

Hit a compression at speed and the damper’s job is to soak up that hit without kicking the rear axle sideways or unsettling the six-cylinder’s nose-heavy balance mid-corner. XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally valving is set up specifically to absorb the shock of uneven surfaces and big hits, controlling body movement through a jump or crest so the tyre stays loaded and searching for grip instead of skipping across the surface. On an E36 running a sealed stage, that translates into a car that holds its line under compression, resists the nose-dive under hard braking into a hairpin, and keeps the inline-six’s weight working with the chassis rather than against it. The result is a platform you can push into the next braking zone with confidence, because the last one didn’t unsettle the car.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

This is a damper built specifically for tarmac rally use, not a fast-road coilover with a rally badge on it. The valving is calibrated to absorb the impact of uneven surfaces and larger hits without the shock body kicking back into the chassis, which is what keeps the tyre’s contact patch loaded through a stage rather than skittering over broken ground. That control is what XYZ Racing describes as the car’s stability under load – the point where handling stops being a fight against the road surface and becomes predictable. The base settings on this kit come directly from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally programme, developed and proven on stage rather than on a rolling road, and carried over into the retail spec for the E36.

Fitment for the BMW 3 Series E36 6 CYL (Modified Rr Integrated) (1990-1998)

Built for the six-cylinder BMW 3 Series E36 (chassis code BM17), covering the 1990 to 1998 production run, with the rear damper mount configured for this chassis’s integrated rear-mounting arrangement. Confirm your car sits within this year range and runs the six-cylinder driveline before ordering, as the four-cylinder E36 uses a different fitment.
