XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E36 4 CYL (Modified Rear Integrated) 1990-1998

The E36’s semi-trailing arm rear end was never built with washboard gravel and sudden compression events in mind, and on a stage car with the rear subframe integrated for modified use, that geometry needs a damper that can absorb repeated hard hits without packing down. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover is built specifically for that brief – not a road-biased Super Sport unit dressed up with a rally badge.

For a 4-cylinder E36 running gravel stages or rallycross, the priority shifts entirely from lap-time cornering grip to surviving compressions, crests and off-camber ruts lap after stage. This kit is built around long-travel damping and a spring that can take repeated abuse without the chassis losing composure between hits.

What this coilover does for your 1990-1998 BMW 3 SERIES E36 4 CYL

On a 1990-1998 E36 fitted for gravel work, the long stroke and correspondingly long spring let the rear axle track ruts and compressions instead of skipping across them, which keeps the diff and rear subframe loaded consistently through a stage rather than hopping under G-force mid-corner. The inverted tube damper construction is there to keep the working internals shielded from sandstone and silt kicked up by the front wheels, rather than exposed the way a standard tube design would be. That matters on an E36 where the rear geometry already asks a lot of the dampers under load – give it a shock that packs down over successive hits and the back end starts to wander exactly when you need it settled. Ride height and the specific spring rate for this kit are set to work with the 4-cylinder E36’s weight distribution, so the front doesn’t dive disproportionately to the rear under braking into a gravel hairpin.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing developed this damper primarily for rally and rallycross use, where road conditions are consistently the most aggressive faced in any motorsport discipline – which makes the shock absorber arguably the single most stressed component on a gravel stage car. The inverted tube layout is a deliberate response to that: it’s designed to cope with widely varying surfaces, from sandstone and snow through to silt, without the internals taking on abrasive contamination. Stroke length and spring length are both extended versions of a standard coilover spec, built to absorb chassis vibration from sustained rough-road input, soak up aggressive hits at speed over bouncy terrain, and hold together under the extreme G-forces generated when a rally car turns in on loose surface. Every spring rate offered in this range has been set using data from an active rally racing team, rather than derived from road or circuit testing alone.

Fitment for the BMW 3 SERIES E36 (1990-1998)

This kit is built for the BMW 3 Series E36, chassis code BM15, across the 4-cylinder engine range and the full 1990-1998 production run. It is specified for the modified, rear-end-integrated configuration used on stage and rallycross builds rather than a standard road chassis.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Pillow ball top mountPillow ballPSolid pillow-ball (spherical bearing) upper — chosen for rigidity and precise camber adjustment, the sharpest steering response of the options.
