XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E36 4 CYL (Modified Rear Integrated) 1990-1998

The E36’s multi-link rear axle was a genuine step up from the E30’s semi-trailing arm set-up, but on a sealed tarmac stage – crested brows, mid-corner ridges, a change of camber right where the outside rear is loaded hardest – even a well-located rear end needs damping that keeps pace with the surface, not just the driver. XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally coilover is built for exactly that brief on the 1990-1998 E36 3 Series: a four-cylinder chassis light enough over the nose to change direction fast, provided the dampers can control what happens next.

This is not a fast-road spring-and-damper set dressed up for rally use. The valving is built around the repeated, unpredictable jolt loads a tarmac stage throws at a car – a pothole hidden in a shadow, a ridge at the exit of a fast right-hander – rather than the smoother, more repeatable inputs of a circuit.

What this coilover does for your 1990-1998 BMW 3 Series

On this E36, the immediate change is how the rear axle deals with a bump mid-corner instead of skipping sideways: the shock body is kept under control rather than left to buck free, so the outside rear tyre stays loaded and finds traction instead of skating over the top of a ridge. Because the valving is built to absorb a hard, undefined jolt rather than a smooth track kerb, the nose stays settled enough on the four-cylinder E36 that you can commit to a direction change without the front pushing wide first. The result on a stage is stability you can actually use: less of the car’s energy going into vertical movement over broken tarmac, more of it staying as grip for the next corner.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Tarmac Rally coilover specifically around sealed-stage events, where the surface is asphalt but never flat – patched sections, crown changes and ridges thrown up by run-off gravel all show up as sudden, undefined inputs rather than the smooth, repeatable loads of a circuit. The damper is set up to absorb that kind of hit without transmitting it straight into the chassis: a hard-edged bump gets soaked up in the shock body instead of kicking the rear end sideways, which is what keeps the tyre’s contact patch loaded and gripping through the moment that matters. That focus on absorbing an unpredictable jolt, rather than simply supporting weight, is what XYZ Racing’s own Tarmac Rally stage experience was built around, and every setting is tuned to keep the car stable and composed rather than reactive when the surface throws something unexpected at it.

Fitment for the BMW 3 Series (1990-1998)

This coilover kit is built for the E36 3 Series four-cylinder cars (chassis code BM15) produced from 1990 to 1998, using the modified rear-integrated mounting configuration at the back axle. Check your car falls within this four-cylinder E36 window before ordering – six-cylinder E36 models use different rear geometry and are listed separately.
