XYZ Racing Drift Spec Coilovers — BMW 3 SERIES E30 4 CYL OE φ45 (Front Welding OE Rear Separated) 1982-1992

The E30’s semi-trailing arm rear end is the reason it became a default drift chassis long before drift was a mainstream discipline in the UK – light, rear-driven, and eager to break traction the moment a driver lifts or trail-brakes into a corner. The XYZ Racing Drift Spec coilover for this BMW 3 Series 4-cylinder platform is built around that behaviour rather than fighting it, giving a driver the tools to hold an angle instead of just surviving one.

Where a road-biased coilover on an E30 chases outright grip, Drift Spec is set up to help control the slide once it starts: consistent body control through turn-in, and a ride height drop that keeps the rear geometry working through a long bump stroke rather than running out of travel mid-slide.

What this coilover does for your 1982-1992 BMW 3 Series

Fitted to a 4-cylinder E30 – lighter over the nose than the six-cylinder cars – the front end already rotates more readily than a 325i or 320i, and this kit is calibrated around that lighter nose rather than a generic 3 Series spring rate. The front strut uses the OE-diameter 45mm welding-type insert, so geometry and steering feel stay close to what the chassis was designed around, while the rear runs as a separated spring-over-shock rather than a strut, giving independent control of ride height and damping at the semi-trailing arm. Dropping the ride height on both ends within the coilover’s bump stroke lowers the roll centre and keeps weight transfer more predictable as the car initiates and holds a slide, so it settles into an angle instead of snapping. For a car facing repeated high-speed direction changes on a drift line, that predictability at the limit matters more than outright spring stiffness.

About the Drift Spec coilover

XYZ Racing built the Drift Spec range around one job: keeping the car’s body settled while it’s sideways at speed. Rather than chasing maximum lateral grip, the spring and damper combination is tuned to stabilise the chassis through a high-speed turn so the driver can hold a clean, repeatable angle instead of correcting a wandering rear end. That stability is what enhances drifting performance in practice – the car reacts the same way run after run rather than needing constant correction. Getting the ride height drop right, within the coilover’s designed bump stroke, is central to how the kit works: nail that drop and the geometry keeps working through the slide instead of topping or bottoming out mid-corner. On this E30 fitment that means a front end matched to the factory 45mm strut diameter for a welded-in insert, paired with a separated rear shock and spring so ride height and damping can be set independently at the back axle.

Fitment for the BMW 3 Series (1982-1992)

This kit is built specifically for the 4-cylinder BMW 3 Series E30, produced between 1982 and 1992, chassis reference BM05-1. The front end is matched to the factory 45mm strut diameter for a welding-type insert, and the rear uses a separated spring-over-shock arrangement rather than a rear strut. Confirm your car is a 4-cylinder E30 – the six-cylinder cars use a different front strut diameter and are not covered by this listing.

This suspension is designed for Drift race especially. With its special design, it helps the racers stabilize the vehicle body while in high speed turning in order to make a perfect angle. It can also enhance drifting performance. After lowing the ride height with proper bump stroke, you will realize how we made the drift controlling to the excellent condition.

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

Front

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.

Rear

  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
