XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Audi A3 HATCH 5D 8P 4WD φ50 (Modified Rear Integrated) 2004-2012

The 8P A3’s Haldex-based quattro driveline eats into the rear suspension space that a standard damper would want to occupy, so any coilover built for this chassis has to be drawn around that packaging before it can do anything else. XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally coilover for the four-wheel-drive A3 Hatch uses a modified, rear-integrated damper specifically to clear that hardware, rather than forcing a generic strut into a rear end it wasn’t designed for.

This is a sealed-stage kit, not a fast-road or circuit part. The φ50 strut body and the settings behind it are built for the compression events a tarmac stage throws at a car repeatedly within one run – kerb strikes on the apex, crested braking zones, load transfer through a tightening radius – rather than the occasional big hit of a road pothole.

What this coilover does for your 2004-2012 Audi A3 Hatch 8P quattro

On a car where the quattro system already shifts weight and drive rearward compared with the front-wheel-drive A3, the rear-integrated damper keeps that end of the car settled under the braking and direction changes a stage produces corner after corner. The φ50 strut diameter gives the damper more surface area to control oil flow under repeated big compressions than a slimmer road-biased unit, which matters when you’re taking the same jump or crest multiple times on a stage rather than once. Tyre contact through broken tarmac and mid-corner ridges improves because the damper is absorbing the surface rather than passing it straight to the tyre, and that keeps traction more consistent through a run where grip is already inconsistent by nature. The result on your A3 is a chassis that holds its line through repeated hits instead of skipping wide after the second or third one.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built this damper specifically around sealed-stage tarmac conditions rather than smooth circuit tarmac or public roads, so the priority is absorbing the impact of an uneven, sometimes broken road surface without kicking that shock into the chassis. Across the bigger compressions a stage produces – jumps, crests, sudden dips – the damper is tuned to suppress body movement rather than let it translate into the car’s structure, which is what keeps the tyre loaded and gripping instead of skipping. That focus on maintaining contact patch under repeated hard inputs is what XYZ Racing describes as the stability behind "perfect handling" in their own words, and it’s a fair description of what a rally damper is actually for: keeping the car predictable when the surface isn’t. The tune itself comes directly from XYZ Racing’s own tarmac rally programme rather than being adapted from a track or road damper after the fact, so the settings reflect what the team has learned running sealed stages rather than a generic starting point.

Fitment for the Audi A3 Hatch 5D 8P 4WD (2004-2012)

Built for the 8P-generation A3 5-door Hatch with the 4WD Haldex quattro driveline, chassis code AU04-A, across the 2004 to 2012 production run. This is the modified, rear-integrated damper variant specific to the quattro rear end – confirm your A3 is the 4WD version before ordering, as the front-wheel-drive 8P uses a different rear suspension layout entirely.
