XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Mazda 6 (GG1) (NON MPS) 2002-2008

The first-generation Mazda 6 GG1 saloon and estate arrived as a chassis that punched above its segment – sharp steering, a willing front end, and a rear that would actually rotate when asked. Two decades on, the standard struts are tired, the top mounts are knocking, and the body roll that was acceptable in 2003 now feels like a parachute. The XYZ Racing Top Sport coilover is the kit that returns this car to the way Mazda’s chassis engineers always hinted it could be.

Top Sport is XYZ’s circuit-leaning street coilover – aimed at the GG1 owner who uses the car for fast B-road work, the occasional track day at Castle Combe or Brands Hatch, and still wants to drive it home without rearranging fillings.

What this coilover does for your 2002-2008 Mazda 6 (GG1) (NON MPS)

Spring rates lifted above the OE figure put a stop to the GG1’s float over crests and the wallow that creeps in when you load the front end through a fast corner. Ride-height adjustment lets you pull the wheel up into the arch and kill the factory 4×4 gap without resorting to lowering springs sitting on knackered dampers. The 30-way damping adjuster sits on top of each unit, so a softer setting on the M25 commute and a firmer one for the trackday paddock is a five-minute job per corner. Monotube construction means the oil and gas stay separated under repeat heat cycles – useful on a chassis that historically chews through cheap twin-tube replacements within a season of spirited driving. Camber-adjustable front top mounts (where fitted to this application) open the door to dialling out the understeer the GG1 develops on worn rubber.

About the Top Sport coilover

Top Sport sits in XYZ Racing’s road-and-light-track tier – one step up from the entry Super Sport, one step below the dedicated Circuit Master. Each strut is a full-bodied monotube damper running an inverted layout on applications where strut geometry allows, with a 30-position bump-and-rebound adjuster that moves both damping circuits together rather than separately. Springs are linear-rate, paired to the dampers at the factory rather than picked from a generic catalogue. Ride height is set via the lower spring perch on the strut body, which preserves shock stroke – the lazy way of dropping ride height through spring preload is what makes cheap coilovers crash over expansion joints, and Top Sport doesn’t do that. Pillowball top mounts on the front are standard where the chassis takes them, giving you sharper turn-in feel than the rubber bushes Mazda fitted from new.

Fitment for the Mazda 6 (GG1) (Years 2002-2008)

This kit is built for the first-generation Mazda 6 GG1 saloon and estate, NON MPS variants only, across the full 2002-2008 production span. The MPS turbocharged model uses different front strut hardware and is a separate part number. If your car is the standard 2.0 or 2.3 petrol or the 2.0 diesel on the GG1 chassis code, this is your fitment.
