XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Hyundai ELANTRA 1996-2000

The first-generation Elantra J2 is a featherweight front-driver with a short wheelbase and a willingness to rotate that few mid-90s saloons can match – exactly the qualities a privateer rally crew looks for when budgets are tight and the entry list is long. Drop it onto a loose-surface special and the standard dampers run out of stroke before the first crest. That is the gap the XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover for the Hyundai Elantra 1996-2000 is built to close.

This is the aggressive end of the XYZ Racing range: an inverted-tube damper on a long-stroke chassis, sprung for compliance over high-frequency hits rather than flat-floor circuit work. If you are running a J2 Elantra on gravel stages, autotest events or low-tier rallycross, this is the spec that matches the job.

What this coilover does for your 1996-2000 Hyundai Elantra

A 1990s Elantra on tarmac-spec springs simply runs out of travel on a stage road – you feel it as harsh top-outs over crests, a dead front end mid-corner, and unloaded rear wheels skipping under braking. The Gravel Rally setup lengthens the working stroke so the chassis can soak compressions without bottoming, then meters the rebound so the suspension follows the surface back down rather than going light. On the J2 platform that translates to a front end that keeps biting through silt and broken Tarmac, and a rear axle that stays planted on corner exit instead of pattering away from the throttle. Combined with the longer free-length springs, you get the high-G cornering support a rally car needs without the brittle ride a circuit damper would punish you with on a transit stage.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally is XYZ Racing’s loose-surface-specific damper, developed for rally and rallycross use rather than adapted from a road kit. The architecture is an inverted tube design, chosen so the damper body and rod work harder against the lateral loads thrown up by sandstone, snow and silt – three surfaces XYZ specifically engineered around. Stroke length is extended well beyond a road coilover, and the spring is matched to that stroke so the chassis has somewhere to go when the surface disappears under a wheel. Spring rates across the range have been validated by working rally teams, not signed off on a dyno bench, which is the only sensible way to land on a useful number for a stage car. The result is a damper built to absorb chassis vibration on high-speed bouncy roads and tolerate the G-loads that rally cornering generates lap after stage.

Fitment for the Hyundai Elantra (1996-2000)

This kit is fitted to the J2 Elantra chassis (XYZ code HY05) covering model years 1996 through 2000, both saloon and Lantra-badged variants where the suspension architecture is shared. Confirm your chassis matches the J2 generation before ordering – the J3 facelift that followed used revised front geometry.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
