XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Hyundai ELANTRA 1996-2000

The J2-generation Elantra is a featherweight front-driver with a softly-sprung McPherson nose that was tuned for ride comfort, not for compression strikes on a sealed special stage. The Tarmac Rally coilover is the spec to fit when you’re running a 1996-2000 Elantra on closed tarmac stages and you need the chassis to take a kerb-strike, a mid-corner ridge, or a sudden camber change without unloading the inside front wheel.

This is a stage-tuned damper, not a circuit setup re-badged for gravel. The valving is built around impact absorption first, body control second – which is exactly the priority order tarmac rally drivers want when the surface ahead is unknown and the suspension has to recover instantly between hits.

What this coilover does for your 1996-2000 Hyundai Elantra

On a stock Elantra the front end washes wide the moment the surface gets uneven, and a single mid-corner pothole is enough to spike the chassis into understeer. Fitting the Tarmac Rally damper resets that behaviour. The valving is calibrated to swallow sharp inputs – kerbs, expansion joints, broken tarmac at stage edges – and put the contact patch back on the road before the next steering input.

You’ll feel three things on the first run. The car stops floating over crests and starts taking direction the instant the wheel moves. Repeat-hit fade disappears, so a long stage feels the same in the closing kilometres as it did at the start. And traction out of slow corners improves, because the rear is no longer skipping over surface texture under throttle.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally is engineered specifically for sealed-stage rally work where the surface is paved but punishing. Its core trait is impact absorption – the damper is built to ride out a big hit without packing down or spiking the chassis, which keeps the tyre loaded through the disturbance and preserves grip exactly when a stiffer track damper would have lost it.

XYZ Racing develops this spec from active tarmac rally competition data, so the settings reflect what works on actual stages rather than a smooth circuit. The damping profile suppresses body movement through the slow phase of a bump and stays compliant through the fast phase, which is the combination that lets a car cover broken tarmac at speed without unsettling the driver. The result is the kind of stability that turns a flat-out stage section from a survival exercise into a place where you can attack the apex.

Fitment for the Hyundai Elantra (1996-2000)

This kit fits the J2-chassis Elantra produced from 1996 to 2000, internal chassis code HY05. Confirm your build year and trim against the fitment list before ordering – early 1996 cars and late 2000 cars occasionally cross production-year hardware revisions.
