XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Honda PRELUDE BB5/6/7/8 1996-2001

The fifth-generation Prelude was never meant to see a stage end, but its 50:50-ish weight balance, ATTS-equipped front end and stiff unibody make it a genuinely interesting base for a privateer gravel build. What it lacks in factory ground clearance and wheel travel, the XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover is built to give back – and then some.

This is the long-stroke, inverted-strut answer for owners running a BB5/6/7/8 Prelude on loose surfaces, whether that’s a club rallycross car, a hillclimb hack with a gravel section, or a stage-prepped Mk5 living off the tarmac.

What this coilover does for your 1996-2001 Honda Prelude BB5/6/7/8

Drop a Prelude onto road springs at a gravel test and the limitations show up inside the first corner: the shocks pack down, the front end runs out of travel mid-compression, and the H22 starts moving the car around on the bumpstops. The Gravel Rally kit fixes that at the architecture level. Long-stroke damper bodies and matched long-travel springs let the chassis breathe over compressions, sandstone ruts and crested jumps without bottoming the strut, so the front tyres stay loaded when you’re trail-braking into a fourth-gear right. Inverted tube construction stiffens the lower mount where a conventional strut flexes most, which sharpens turn-in on a car that historically pushes wide on power. The result is a Prelude that takes a gravel hit, settles, and lets you get back to throttle – rather than skating across the surface on a half-collapsed damper.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ developed the Gravel Rally damper specifically for rallycross and gravel-stage use, where surface conditions vary from compacted sandstone to deep silt and snow within a single stage. The inverted-tube layout puts the larger-diameter body at the bottom, increasing rigidity at the lower mounting point and reducing the bending loads that destroy conventional struts on impact. Stroke length and spring length are both extended versus the road-going XYZ ranges, giving the chassis room to absorb high-frequency washboard hits and the headroom to take big G loads on cornering compressions without going coil-bound. Spring rates aren’t catalogue guesses – XYZ states every rate in the range is validated by working rally teams on competitive events. For the Prelude specifically, that means a setup philosophy borrowed from cars that actually finish stages, not a road coilover with stiffer springs bolted in.

Fitment for the Honda Prelude BB5/6/7/8 (1996-2001)

This kit is built for the fifth-generation Honda Prelude on the BB5, BB6, BB7 and BB8 chassis codes, covering 1996 through 2001 production. That spans the H22A4 SH-equipped UK/Euro cars and the wider BB-series family. Confirm your chassis code on the VIN plate before ordering – the BB-series Preludes share suspension geometry across the run but specification differs from the earlier BB1-4 generation.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
