XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Honda PRELUDE BB5/6/7/8 1996-2001

The fifth-gen Prelude’s biggest weakness on a B-road or a circuit was never the H22A under the bonnet – it was the soft, long-travel OEM suspension that let a 1,250kg front-drive coupe roll onto its outside front tyre and wash wide. The Top Sport coilover is built to fix exactly that: a 30-50% firmer damping curve and stiffer springs that keep the BB-chassis flat through turn-in, so the ATTS rear (BB6) or the limited-slip front can actually do their jobs.

This is the spec for owners running occasional track days at Cadwell or Castle Combe who still want to drive the car to work on Monday. Top Sport sits between the road-biased Super Sport and the dedicated circuit kit – firm enough to reward commitment, civilised enough that potholes on the A1 won’t loosen your fillings.

What this coilover does for your 1996-2001 Honda Prelude

Drop the car onto Top Sport and the first thing you feel is body control. The OEM Prelude floats over crests and pitches under braking – the firmer damping and 2kg/mm-stiffer spring rate stop that pitch dead, so weight transfers cleanly to the front tyres when you brake into a corner. Mid-corner the chassis stops leaning onto its outside edge, which means the Bridgestones (or whatever you’re running) keep their contact patch flat instead of rolling onto the sidewall.

Ride height is adjustable so you can lose the factory 4×4-stance wheel gap without resorting to spacers or cut springs. On uneven British surfaces the high-frequency damping absorbs the small stuff – expansion joints, broken tarmac – rather than transmitting every ridge into the cabin. The result is a Prelude that finally feels as quick as the H22A always promised.

About the Top Sport coilover

Top Sport is XYZ Racing’s road-and-occasional-track specification, calibrated from the company’s own race programme and then softened back to something liveable on the street. The damping curve runs 30-50% firmer than a street kit, and spring rates step up roughly 2kg/mm over a comfort setting – enough to suppress body movement under hard cornering and braking without battering the chassis on motorway expansion joints.

The brief is impact absorption with stability: soak up sharp inputs from kerbs and broken surfaces, keep the tyre loaded through compressions, then resist roll when you commit to a corner. XYZ describe it as suitable for track days and aggressive driving, and the calibration reflects that – settings come straight from their Top Sport race experience, scaled for a car that still has to handle a Tesco run.

Fitment for the Honda Prelude (1996-2001)

This kit fits the fifth-generation Prelude chassis (HN46 – BB5, BB6, BB7 and BB8 codes) covering the 1996-2001 production run. That spans the F22-engined BB5, the H22A4 VTEC BB6 with ATTS, and the JDM-spec BB7/BB8 variants. Confirm your chassis code on the door jamb plate before configuring.
