XYZ Racing Top Sport Coilovers — Volkswagen GOLF R MK7 4WD φ55 (Modified Rear Integrated) (Cancellation Kit for Electronic Damping) 2012-2020

The Golf R Mk7’s factory Dynamic Chassis Control struts are electronically valved, so any mechanical coilover swap has to deal with the DCC wiring or the dash lights up with fault codes the ECU can no longer clear. This Top Sport kit is built with the cancellation kit for electronic damping included, so the φ55-bore struts and the Modified Rr Integrated rear end go in without the car hunting for a damper signal that no longer exists.

Golf R’s Haldex all-wheel-drive system shifts torque rearward the instant you’re on the throttle, but the nose still carries the EA888 engine, the front differential and the intercooler stack. Top Sport runs noticeably firmer low-speed compression than the factory Golf R was ever specified with, keeping that front end settled through direction changes rather than leaning on tyre sidewall to do the work mid-corner.

What this coilover kit does for your 2012-2020 Volkswagen GOLF R MK7 4WD

Fitting Top Sport to a Golf R MK7 changes how the car loads up under trail-braking into a corner: the increased low-speed damping resists the nose-dive that the factory DCC struts were tuned to soften for comfort, so you get a more direct read on front-end grip the moment you turn in. On the road that firmer base also cuts the float you feel over motorway expansion joints at speed, because the strut is now controlling body movement rather than letting the spring do it alone. Through a fast direction change the Haldex system can only send torque rearward as fast as the chassis lets it – a tighter front end means that transfer happens sooner, so the rear axle picks up drive earlier out of the corner. Ride height also drops from Golf R’s factory setting, lowering the centre of gravity across the front diff and engine mass that otherwise fights you under hard turn-in.

About the Top Sport coilover

Top Sport steps the damping up by roughly 30 to 50 percent over XYZ Racing’s street-biased settings, or alternatively raises spring rate by around 2kg/mm, depending on how the kit is specified for a given platform. That extra resistance is there to control the strut through a big hit – a compression, a kerb, a mid-corner bump – without the body continuing to move after the wheel has already settled, which is what actually costs you tyre contact patch mid-corner. XYZ Racing developed the Top Sport valving from its own track-day and race programme, carrying those settings down into a kit that’s still usable on the road rather than a pure circuit-only build. The result is a chassis that stays flatter and more predictable under repeated hard inputs, whether that’s a trailed brake into a hairpin or a rough section of B-road taken at pace, and a front end that transmits what the tyre is doing rather than absorbing it into body roll.

Fitment for the Volkswagen GOLF R MK7 (2012-2020)

This kit is specified for the Golf R MK7, chassis code VO20-12-C, covering the 2012 to 2020 production run in 4WD form with the φ55 strut bore and Modified Rr Integrated rear mounting. It includes the cancellation kit for electronic damping needed to run a mechanical coilover in place of the factory DCC-controlled struts on cars built with that system. Confirm your Golf R was specified with DCC before ordering, as this variant is built specifically to replace that setup.
