XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Volkswagen GOLF MK7 φ55 (Rear Twist-Beam Suspension) 2012-2020

The Mk7 Golf’s twist-beam rear axle is built for a compromise most owners never test on gravel or closed tarmac stages. Push the standard set-up hard over broken surfaces and the rear end telegraphs every ridge straight into the chassis, while the front strut top mounts absorb hit after hit with no way to recalibrate for the next crest. XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally coilover is built specifically to take that punishment and keep the rear beam settled.

This is a damper tuned for stage work rather than smooth circuit tarmac: it is calibrated to absorb the shock of uneven, broken road surfaces without the harsh secondary impact that unsettles a twist-beam rear end over compressions and crests.

What this coilover does for your 2012-2020 Volkswagen GOLF MK7 Φ55 (rr Twist-beam Suspension)

Fitted to a 2012-2020 Golf Mk7 with the φ55 twist-beam rear, this coilover changes how the car absorbs a bad surface rather than just how it sits. Big hits, potholes and washboard sections that would normally send a jolt through the body are damped at the strut before that energy reaches the cabin or unsettles the rear beam’s geometry. That control keeps the contact patch loaded more consistently, which is where the tyre actually finds grip on loose or damaged surfaces, and it’s the difference between a rear end that steps out over a crest and one that stays planted through it. Ride height is adjustable via the coilover’s threaded body, letting you set stance and corner weight to suit stage conditions rather than accepting a fixed factory setting. The result is a Golf that holds its line over the kind of surface that would have the standard suspension pattering and losing traction.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally line is built around one specific problem: sealed-stage tarmac and rough closed-road rally surfaces punish a damper in a way smooth circuit tarmac never does. The valving is set up to soak up big, sudden impacts – potholes, broken edges, mid-corner bumps – without the shock spiking through into the chassis, which is what actually suppresses body shake and keeps the tyre’s contact patch working instead of skipping. That absorption is tuned to protect traction specifically, because a rally car that’s bouncing off crests is a rally car that’s not putting power down. The settings on this unit come directly from XYZ’s own Tarmac Rally programme rather than being a detuned circuit spec, so the compression and rebound curves are built around stage-speed hits rather than track-smooth loading. Vehicle stability under those conditions is the design brief here – a chassis that stays composed as the surface changes underneath it, not one that’s simply stiffer.

Fitment for the Volkswagen GOLF MK7 (2012-2020)

Built for the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 fitted with the φ55 rear twist-beam suspension (chassis code VO20-7), covering the 2012 to 2020 production run. Confirm your car uses the φ55 twist-beam rear axle rather than the independent multi-link set-up before ordering, as the two require different rear coilover designs.
