XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Volkswagen GOLF MK7 φ50 (Rear Multi-Link Suspension) 2012-2020

Volkswagen swapped the old torsion-beam rear axle for a proper multi-link setup on the MK7 Golf, and that’s the geometry XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally coilovers are built to exploit once the road stops being smooth. Sealed-stage rally surfaces throw up crests, compressions and camber changes that a circuit-tuned coilover simply isn’t set up to absorb without unsettling the chassis.

This isn’t a track-day spring-and-damper combo dressed up with a rally badge. The valving is calibrated specifically for repeated big hits at speed – the kind of surface a stage throws at a car that a smooth apex never will – while keeping the Golf’s independent rear axle doing its job of putting power down through mid-corner compressions rather than skipping over them.

What this coilover does for your 2012-2020 Volkswagen GOLF MK7 φ50 (Rr Multi-Link Suspension)

Fit these to a MK7 Golf and the first thing you’ll notice is how the rear end stays planted over surface changes that would previously kick the axle sideways – the multi-link geometry has more to work with once the damper is controlling body motion rather than fighting it. Over a rough stage or a broken B-road, the shock body itself moves less, which keeps the tyre’s contact patch loaded and the rear end predictable under trail-braking into a compression. Front-end response sharpens too, because less energy is being wasted compressing and rebounding through a poorly matched spring rate. On a car that’s often run with mixed surface conditions in mind – tarmac one stage, gravel-adjacent debris the next – that composure over sustained abuse matters more than outright spring stiffness.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Tarmac Rally line around one specific problem: uneven, unpredictable pavement taken at speed, repeatedly, for the length of a stage. The damper is tuned to absorb the impact of rough tarmac rather than transmit it, and to soak up the jolt of a big hit – a pothole, a broken edge, a mid-corner ridge – without letting that impact unsettle the body. That control keeps the tyre’s contact patch working instead of skipping, which is where the stability comes from; you feel it as predictable handling through a stage rather than a car that’s constantly correcting itself. The settings baked into this range come directly from XYZ Racing’s own Tarmac Rally programme, not a generic road-going damping curve adapted after the fact – construction and valving were developed against the exact conditions this coilover is sold to handle.
