XYZ Racing Tarmac Rally Coilovers — Volkswagen GOLF MK6 4WD φ55 2008-2012

The GOLF MK6 4WD’s biggest asset on a closed stage is also its biggest tuning problem: drive going to all four corners means the standard dampers have to control weight transfer under power as well as under braking, and on broken tarmac they run out of ideas fast. XYZ Racing’s Tarmac Rally coilover is built around that specific job – controlling a heavier, torque-split chassis across surface changes that would unsettle a two-wheel-drive setup in half the distance.

This is a stage-focused damper, not a fast-road compromise. Where the Super Sport or Circuit Master ranges chase daily comfort or lap time on smooth asphalt, Tarmac Rally is set up for the repeated hits of a sealed-stage surface – camber changes, patched sections, mid-corner bumps – where the car needs to stay planted without ballooning the spring rate to the point of losing traction.

What this coilover does for your 2008-2012 Volkswagen GOLF MK6 4WD Φ55

The core job is absorbing big hits without the body pitching or the tyre losing contact – XYZ built this damper specifically to soak up impacts from uneven pavement and heavy bumps while keeping the tyre loaded and gripping rather than skipping. On the MK6 4WD chassis that matters more than on a front-driver, because a rear axle that’s also putting power down needs to stay composed through the same hit that would just unsettle a passive rear beam. Suppressing body shock through a big compression event keeps the chassis flat enough that the diff and driveline aren’t fighting a car that’s already pitched forward or sideways. The result on stage is what XYZ describe as their Tarmac Rally settings translated from actual rally use: the car holds its line and stays stable rather than skating over the next bump, which on a Golf-based 4WD platform means you can carry speed into the next change of surface instead of backing off to let the chassis settle.

About the Tarmac Rally coilover

The Tarmac Rally damper is purpose-tuned for sealed-stage rally use rather than track or road driving. Its valving is built to soak up the impact of rough, uneven tarmac and absorb sharp jolts from larger bumps without the body kicking back at the driver, which is the failure mode that costs time and confidence on a stage. Suppressing that shock through the body also does a second job: keeping the tyre’s contact patch loaded so traction doesn’t drop out mid-hit. XYZ state that the damping settings on this range come directly from their own Tarmac Rally programme, rather than being a generic road setting turned up in stiffness. The result is a unit engineered to give the car composure and predictable handling on the kind of surface where a standard coilover’s rebound and compression curves simply aren’t designed to cope.
