XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Volkswagen GOLF MK3 1993-1998

Point a MK3 Golf at a loose-stage start line and the standard setup is overwhelmed within yards. The soft, long-legged damping that made the 1993-1998 Volkswagen GOLF MK3 such an easy road car simply runs out of control once the surface turns to gravel, snow or rutted silt, and the nose-heavy front – heaviest of all on the VR6 – washes wide over every crest. This is a different problem to fast-road or circuit work, and it needs a different damper.

The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers for the Volkswagen GOLF MK3 are aimed squarely at gravel-stage rally and rallycross use. Long travel, long springs and an inverted strut design let the car keep its wheels on the deck over bouncing, broken surfaces while still standing up to the loads that build through a committed slide.

What this coilover does for your 1993-1998 Volkswagen GOLF MK3

On a loose surface the gain is immediate. The long stroke keeps the front MacPherson struts working deep into their travel instead of crashing through to the bump stops every time you load a compression, so the front axle stays planted and the understeer the MK3 platform is prone to becomes something you can actually steer through. The inverted tube layout puts more rigidity into the strut body, sharpening turn-in and resisting flex under the side loads of a high-speed direction change. Longer springs soak up the chassis vibration that batters a twist-beam Golf over corrugated gravel, and the rally-derived rate settings hold the body steady when you load the outside corner mid-slide. The result is a MK3 that attacks a rough surface rather than flinching from it.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally damper is engineered for the harshest end of the sport – rallycross and gravel-stage competition, where the road condition is the most punishing in motorsport. XYZ developed the inverted tube construction specifically to cope with mixed and shifting surfaces, from sandstone to snow to soft silt, each of which demands different control from the shock. Long stroke and long springs are central to the design: they let the damper absorb the constant chassis vibration of a fast, bouncy stage road while still carrying the extreme cornering G-force that builds when the car is turned hard. The spring rates are not theoretical either – every rate setting has been validated by XYZ’s own rally racing team, so the baseline you receive is one that has already been run in anger. It is a focused, surface-specific tool rather than a do-everything coilover.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
