XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Proton GEN-2 2004-2012

The Gen-2’s front-wheel drive PR01 platform spent its factory life as a compact family hatch, but Proton’s motorsport programme and a generation of Malaysian club competitors have long understood that it has the bones for stage work. The problem is that factory damper travel was never calibrated for laterite roads, rutted gravel stages, or the surface variation you encounter in a full regional rally event – and off-the-shelf road coilovers don’t close that gap.

The XYZ Racing Gravel Rally coilover for the Proton Gen-2 is built specifically for loose-surface competition. Inverted tube construction and extended stroke geometry give the PR01 chassis what it needs to stay composed when the surface is actively trying to unsettle it.

What this coilover does for your 2004-2012 Proton GEN-2

On the Gen-2, the front axle carries the full compound demand of power delivery, steering load, and braking force in the same corner – a load that becomes acute on gravel when the surface underneath is loose and constantly shifting. The inverted tube configuration significantly increases lateral stiffness in the damper body, reducing flex under the combined cornering and bump loads that laterite stages generate at speed. Long stroke travel keeps both axles in contact with the road over high-speed crests and surface breaks, where a shorter-travel unit would unload the front wheels precisely when steering response is most critical. Spring rate validation under actual rally competition conditions means the setup works from the first stage, not after a season of trial-and-error adjustment.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

The Gravel Rally specification is XYZ Racing’s dedicated loose-surface competition unit, built around the principle that Rally Cross imposes the most aggressive road conditions of any motorsport category. The inverted tube arrangement – outer tube moving over the inner piston rod, the reverse of conventional strut construction – delivers greater resistance to bending loads and lateral flex during the aggressive surface transitions of a gravel stage. Long stroke combined with long springs allows the damper to absorb the high-frequency impacts of broken stone and compacted earth at speed while maintaining control through the sustained G-forces of fast corners. The geometry also accommodates the surface variety within a single event: sandstone, snow, and silt each impose different load patterns, and the extended travel envelope absorbs them without the setup becoming a lash-up across conditions. All spring rate settings were developed and validated by a rally racing programme running these dampers under live competition conditions – not extrapolated from circuit or road data.

Fitment for the Proton GEN-2 (2004-2012)

This kit is built to the PR01 chassis specification and covers the Proton Gen-2 across its full production run from 2004 to 2012. Buyers fitting to a full competition build should confirm clearances against any roll cage installation or body reinforcement work, as modified strut towers can affect suspension geometry at the top mount.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.

Top mounts included with your kit

Every XYZ Racing coilover kit ships with the upper mounts listed below for your exact chassis — no extra parts to source.

  • Pillow ball + rubber top mountPillow ball + rubberP+Pillow-ball upper with a rubber insert — adds steering precision and camber adjustability while keeping some of the factory mount’s harshness damping.
  • Hardened rubber top mountHardened rubberRHardened rubber upper — firmer than the factory bush for tighter response while retaining road-friendly noise and vibration isolation.
  • Aluminium top mountAluminiumAAluminium upper mount — a stiff, lightweight housing that locates the damper precisely and resists flex under load.
