XYZ Racing Gravel Rally Coilovers — Porsche CAYMAN (981) (Cancellation Kit for Electronic Damping) 2012-2016

The 981 Cayman’s mid-engined layout gives it a weight balance closer to 50/50 than any 911, which is a genuine advantage when you’re hunting for traction on loose surfaces rather than tarmac. The factory ride height and PASM electronic damping are tuned for a sports car that never sees a gravel stage, so building a Cayman for rallying starts with abandoning the standard suspension logic entirely. XYZ Racing’s Gravel Rally coilover replaces that setup with a long-travel, inverted-tube damper built for exactly this kind of use.

Because the 981 shipped with electronically controlled dampers, this kit includes the hardware needed to cancel that system and run a passive coilover without PASM throwing a fault – a detail that catches out a lot of DIY Cayman rally conversions. Fit it and the car is ready for sandstone, snow or silt without the electronics arguing with the suspension.

What this coilover does for your 2012-2016 Porsche Cayman (981)

Drop this coilover into the 981 and the first thing you notice is how much travel there suddenly is to work with. Long-stroke dampers and long springs soak up the chassis vibration a gravel stage throws at a car that was designed for smooth back roads, not rutted tracks. The inverted-tube layout keeps the damper shaft protected from stone strikes and side-loading, which matters on a mid-engined chassis where the rear dampers sit close to the diffuser and take the brunt of thrown debris. Spring rates are set from data gathered by an actual rally racing team, so the Cayman’s near-even weight split gets suspension that can actually use it, resisting bottoming under G-force through fast, bumpy corners instead of packing down and pushing wide. On sand, snow or silt, the combination of long travel and inverted construction keeps the car’s footprint on the ground for longer rather than skipping over the surface.

About the Gravel Rally coilover

XYZ Racing built the Gravel Rally line for rally and rallycross use, where surface conditions are more punishing than almost anything else in racing – a shock absorber here isn’t a comfort item, it’s the component standing between the car and a broken chassis. The inverted-tube design flips the conventional coilover layout so the larger tube sits on top, giving the damper more resistance to side-loading and debris strikes across sandstone, snow or loose silt. Stroke length and spring length are both extended well beyond a road coilover’s dimensions, which is what lets the damper absorb repeated hard compressions from a bouncy, high-speed gravel section without running out of travel mid-corner. That extra travel is also what keeps chassis vibration from transmitting straight into the tub. Every spring rate offered in this line has been set using data from a genuine rally racing team rather than bench-test assumptions, so the rates reflect what the car needs to carry real cornering G-force on loose surfaces, not tarmac grip levels.

Fitment for the Porsche Cayman (981) (2012-2016)

This kit is confirmed for the Porsche Cayman 981, chassis code 981, across the 2012 to 2016 model years. It’s specced as the Cancellation Kit for Electronic Damping variant, meaning it includes what’s needed to run this passive coilover on cars built with factory PASM electronic dampers without triggering a system fault.

  • Porsche Cayman 981 suspension built for rallycross and loose-surface stage work.

Spring rate and mounting options for the Gravel Rally kit are set per car – pick your spec for the Cayman 981 in the configurator below.

This damper is mainly design for Rally Racing or Rally Cross. In all racing events, road condition of Rally Cross is the most aggressive one. Hence, it means that the shock absorber is the most important utensil during the Rally gravel competition. We develop inverted tube design to meet each different road condition as sandstone, snow or silt. Long stroke and long spring which enable to absorb chassis vibration, aggressively attack from high speed bouncy road and bear extremely G-force when turning. All spring rate setting are tested by Rally Racing team.
